Thanks for the nice review Joe. There has been a lot of buzz here on CN about the Orion EON 120ED, but very little comment about this scope.

I think the EON is cuter. I see definite color around bright white stars with mine. However I paid about $1200 and for that price I am incredibly happy with it and would recommend it. Love the case too, it fits perfectly in my small car trunk.

Never tried the eyepieces that came with it though.

Thanks Joe. I just got the scope from Amazon, the last one they had, and amazingly for about $1,300. It is a delight to use and has everything one needs to drop it on a mount and start looking. Even though my back yard is about 60% tree obstructed, I was able to see some great views of the little fuzzies and a truly impressive, detailed view of M67.

Does anyone know if the dew shield on this scope is retractable or is it fixed?

Bill

It's fixed, just like the SW100ED f/9 and 80mm ED Pro models.

Clear Skies,
Brian

Could anyone elaborate on this comment made about the glass on this scope from this article:

"The optics are made with a Schott glass positive front Crown element and a second lens element fabricated of fluorite."

I've never seen anyone mention anything about a fluorite element before on this OTA.

Also, is this basically the same OTA ( 114mm Outside diameter) as the Celestron OMNI 120 but in a shorter tube with better optics.

If you read the description of this telescope at OPT, it does say Schott & fluorite. Doug

I reviewed this scope in the June 2014 issue of Astronomy, so you might take a look at that if you have it.

All three instruments in Sky-Watcher's ProED Doublet APO Refractors use the same two-element objective design. Each front Crown element is made of Schott BK-7 glass, while the back Flint element is FPL-53, two of the most advanced extra-low dispersion glasses available. Both have state-of-the-art optical multicoatings.

Overall, I found that the Sky-Watcher 120 ProED Doublet APO refractor is a solid performer. Images were sharp and contrasty with no appreciable secondary chromatic aberration evident. My only complaints, and they were minor, were finder placement and a somewhat rough focuser.
