Celestron guidescope? new
      #5153563 - 04/02/12 04:54 PM

Has anyone used the 80mm celestron guidescope;
http://urlm.in/lwfd

What ya think. Too long a focal length? I am thinking of using it with a c11 and meade dsi pro. How about using it to replace my finder also? Would the ST80 be a better option. I just liked the idea of the Celestron logo on the side I figured the extar FL would help the guiding but am unsure about how easy it will find guide stars. Would it work for a wide field shot or should I go with a AT72ED?

My finder has been hacked and is in use on the AT6RC as a finder/guidescope so I am in need of a finder and guide scope for the C11.
Thanks

Mark

IIRC the C11 is around 18 inches long. If you are still on a Fork you'll need a counterweight under the tube to balance whatever scope you get, which makes the fork tines vibrate (been there).

That said, I have the AT66 and the 72 is supposedly a better scope. Being able to use it as a big finder, guider, stand alone grab and go...makes it a no brainer. The AT66 isn't perfect but a pretty darn good and light. I have piggybacked it but use a GEM. I'd also spring for the Losmandy guide scope rings but I like SOLID. YMMV.

I have a CGEM so it would be pushing weight wise with the celestron 80, but I won't have a problem with forks. Celestron does show it mounted on a cgem with the nexguider. The celestron package does come with some decent looking losmandy rings. The AT72ED does look like a nice scope and it comes in white!

I also have the AT72ED. It's the widest field scope I have. I have been gearing up to use it as a sight scope for my big dob when it comes, but it requires rings to mount it there. Not real keen on nicking the surface with the ring tines. I also have and ADM side by saddle so I can mount it up up in parallel with any of my other mountable scopes. The saddle also has dual saddles for both vixen and losmandy style :-) it does everything!!!

I'm to so sure now I'll irretrievably mount up the 72' now... It's such a slick scope. Especially since I got a moonlight focused for it.

The 80mm you posted looks cheap enough for the job.
