What was your 1st TV eyepiece?
      #5158053 - 04/05/12 06:07 PM

I just got my first Televue Eyepiece today after being in the hobby a little over a year. It's a second hand smoothside Circle R 21mm TV plossl. Clouds in the forecast tonight but I was able to do some daytime viewing and looks razor sharp. Great eye relief too. So what was your first TV eyepiece?

The current version of the 32mm plossl. I have since sold that one and switched to my current "retro" line-up of Televues in my signature. Love the smoothies!

I have a Nagler 3-6mm zoom and a Nagler type 2 20mm both in the mail. Not sure which will arrive first.

The very first 13mm Nagler (now called Type 1) when it just had come out around 1980. That eyepiece still inspires awe today. Huge and heavy - 1.25" and 2" barrel diameteres in the same eyepiece.

Not long after that I got the TV 2" diameter 40mm Wide Field. It inspires equally as much awe. Huger and much heavier than the 13mm Nagler.

27mm Panoptic. I couldn't stand the pincushion so I sold it.

The first EP I ever bought was a 35mm Panoptic and the last a 55mm Plossl. And a ton of other ES and Orion EP's in between.

Back in the late 80's I purchased a 11mm Nagler type-1 eyepiece & with regret-I sold it in the early 90's. Also TV 7.4mm,13mm & 17mm smoothie Plossls I no longer have. The 10.5mm TV(R)smoothie Plossl I currently own, is going nowhere except into my star diagonal.

My first TV eyepiece was a 24mm TV Widefield which I purchased used along with a 1.25 inch Paracorr. I still have the 24mm Widefield and use it frequently, more often than the 22mm Panoptic. Looks very old and tired but it still does a good job in a faster scope...

I still "have" the 1.25 inch Paracorr though it is on long term loan to a certain fellow who is known for his prowess with SCTs. He is also the author of several books. His next book, soon to come out is:

"Chewing and Abusing a Schmidt-Casserole Telescope"

subtitled: "I See the Light, Dobs are Great, GOTO is GONE."

(No malice intended, he's been a great mentor to us all . I'm just trying to score a couple of points )

Jon

At the TSP in 1990 or 91 Al had a special, buy any two Naglers and get a 4.7 for free.
So I got a 20t2, a 9t1 and then traded the 4.7 for some Silver top Plossels because I did not think that I needed it for my C8.
Keep both of them untill the E's came out.

20mm Nagler Type 2. Purchased brand new from Pauli's Discount Optics on May 24, 1995. Most fantastic thing I ever looked through, or at least I thought so at the time. Nothing but Tele Vue eyepieces ever since except for an occasional ortho here and there.
