GPS/CPC alt motor runs, will not stop
      #5165573 - 04/10/12 05:13 PM

Posting for a friend who showed me his problem. 8" CPC 800 aligns fine, but when slewing to a target comes (somewhat) close and then continues to slew in altitude, at slow rate, without stopping until stopped manually. I have no experience with these instruments, tried firmware update, no change. Can someone recognize quickly what is going on? Thanks!

Could be a number of things. Most often it is a power issue. Try the telescope ON A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY and make sure the cable is good and connection secure. Firmware updates will not do pea-turkey.

If improving power does not help, try resetting the hand control to factory defaults.

Ronen, Uncle Rod is right on target. Sounds a lot like the issues I had and it was power cable. (I could sometimes align, but when trying to do anything else, it had a mind of its own and would not stop.)
Easy to check out. Put at Speed 9. Push right direction button. Listen to motor whine. Then while still pushing the right button, hit the up button. The first motor whine should not change much. If it does, then you have power issues. Try a different battery or get an AC power supply.
If a good charged battery still exhibits the problem, then replace the battery cable. C sent me a new one when I isolated the problem to the cable. If the cable is small and round, I would be suspicious of it. If it is a 2 conductor cable with thick conductors like an indoor extension cord, it should be good. You can't meter out a bad cable, the cable just cannot handle the load (I tried new ends, even split the cable in 2, each half could not handle the amp load, so it was a bad cable.)
Brian
