Man, I waited years to do this! Here's what I did. I put a 18-55mm Canon IS lens and a 58mm Lumicon H-Alpha filter in front of the lens mounted on my SBIG ST8300M camera. I used a special adapter to mount the lens on one side and a T-mount threads on the other side. After tinkering to get the focus just right, I shot this!

I took a 5 minute shot with the lens stopped down to f/5.6 to try to reduce the coma at the edges of the frames. The TOP side is actually one frame and the BOTTOM side is the other. Using photomerge in Adobe Photoshop CS5, I selected auto anti-vignet and anti-distortion etc settings in there and it did a surprisingly good job merging the images together. Too bad it's in Parma!

I think I will try this again when I go with my astro-buddies to B.E.O.T.S. at the June star gazing meet. The skies there are much darker than here. We gotta move outta this town one of these days! I am having way too much fun taking pictures of the sky for sure! What I would really like to attempt is this sort of image using regular RGB filters to accomplish a color image of the Milky Way.

Lenny; man...wow ......reminds me of the black and white photos all the observatorys took , when I was a kid.
I could just oh so barely see the line where you merged em, but doubt I would have looked or noticed it if you hadnt said anything.
The olden day astronomers would have given theyre eye teeth to gwet pictures like that in such a short period of time.

Thank you all for the compliments. Know what? I just thought of something...I need to add a IDAS LP filter in the filter train! That would isolate out more of the light pollution. I use that filter now with my regular setups using a 1.25" IDAS LP2 filter on advice of John Crilly and wow did I see a much better pass through of the regular or narrowband imaging capbility. I think I will need a adapter for the 48mm filter to this current 58mm H-Alpha filter. Gotta start saving for that!

Hi Zach!

Nice shots sir! You captured some decent nebulosity around the stars of the Pleiades too! I like that. M13 looks relly nice there and the color of the Albireo double is beautiful without over exposing it. Very good!

Thanks Jason and Lenny!

I should have taken more subs of M45, but I was tired having been outside for 4 hours already. Maybe next time. I also need to get a guiding camera so I can bump the subs up to 4-5 minutes.

Nice images Zacky!

A guy that we built for a few years ago in Indiana was featured on PBS in an astronomy segment.

Zach,

I recommend the SSAG from Orion. Occasionally these appear cheaper in AM or here. It's very easy to use and with PHD Guide software, you'll be "pro"

I'm glad Dan got to be on the local PBS channel. He's huge on outreach over there in Hoosier country. Sorta neat seeing the observatory featured on TV too. There's a couple squeeks in the audio when he's rolling the roof off. Don't know what the hell that was.

Mice are nocturnal....they run, screaming with fear, at the first sign of light!

On the other hand, perhaps it's those steel wheels with no lubrication? Well, shut my mouth, did I say that?

The pleasure of working with you and Don was all mine! I'd do more if the opportunity ever presents.

No need to post those pics, I know what I look like.

Thanks for allowing me to operate the drill. Most run with fear when I am in control of heavy equipment. How's the leg? Did it heal yet?

Snickering. Sounds like something I would do Steve.
