Both 28mm RKE's that I ordered from Surplus Shed arrived in the mail this morning.
They were packaged in a large padded mailer, with substantial bubble-wrap enclosing the small paper envelopes containing the eyepieces.
Both are older barrels, engraved with "Edmund Scientific" as opposed to the silk-screened "Edmund Optics" logo, and of course had the encircling red grip ring.
Both have the usual anti-reflection-coated lens surfaces.
One was in absolutely like-new condition, save for some internal dust and debris, which was quickly dispensed with.
The other is not quite as pristine: the thread-in portion of the barrel had some purely cosmetic machining marks, and there is a tiny nick in the eyelens, almost dead center, equivalent to a speck of dust (that's surplus, folks!)... not large enough to be bothersome, especially as I plan on using this particular eyepiece for public viewing through an older Edmund 'scope.
Daytime views through both appear equivalent to the older 28mm's I compared them to; will perform further tests this evening, if clear.
Conclusion: for $35.00 each, this was quite a good deal. Many thanks to those such as Oldtimer and BillB9430 who gave the forum a heads-up regarding this sale.

I ordered one also. I will compare it to the 30 year old RKE that has been one of my favorite eyepieces in all my scopes. Its great that surplus shed can sell it for the same price I bought mine in Barrington, NJ around 1982! Now they are $63 from Edmund Optics

I received an email notification that my RKE shipped! I've been looking for a used 25mm Ortho VT for ages. This should be a fine substitute. Anyone have both?
It looks to be still in stock on the web site. I'm surprised given the number of enthusiastic posts. I'm wondering the story behind these EPs. Are they "new" old stock? Maybe it was found in an old warehouse or storage unit?

Thanks for the tip.
Mine's on the way.
It'll assume a the role of low power finder for my 60mm long focus achromats and SCTs with 1.25" visual backs.
The 60mm achromat (f/16.7) line up is: 28mm RKE, 16mm Konig II, 12.5mm Ultima, 10mm CZJ Ortho and 8mm RKE. A nice, small, light set that complements the slow 60mm format well.
Regards,
Jim

Mine are also on the way - I expect them within 5-7 days (considering they have to cross over the pond)

I've actually had two sets of RKEs over the years, and dumped both of them for better glass. But hey, $35 for nostalgic, NOS American glass...I couldn't resist.

My shipping confirmation came almost a week after I ordered. It should be here anyday. In my 2.5X Powermate the 28 RKE gives a 11.5mm FL with ER staying the same. Should make for interesting floating image Moon viewing in my cats. This is the second simple eyepiece I've ordered recently! They are long FL and inexpensive-the other one's a 25 Sterling Plossl-but my only other simple eyepiece is a 15 TV Plossl so this is a big step for me. David

My problem (?) is that I never get around to that "dumping" phase of eyepiece acquisition. I always have the idea in the back of my head that some night, with some telescope, even my ugly ducking eyepieces will show themselves as swans. If I push them out of the nest, I'll never know.

Ummmmmm.... I'm I the only one who recieved one without any caps on the front or back? I reached into the package and brought out the eyepiece with my thumb dead center on glass... I guess thats what you can expect for $35 haha.
