I'm a little late to the party, & bummed, I just checked SS and they do still have some left but they don't include the snazzy Red Rubber Grip, but they're still at the same price. I was thinking of getting a pair for my Denk II's as I have 8 & 12 RKE singles that I enjoy, but I have a pair of Denk 21's, and don't know If a pair of 28 RKE's would be worth while.
I am new to Binoviewing so could use some advice. Any thoughts?
Right now I have:
The pair of D21's ( I really enjoy )
A pair of Panoptic 15's
A pair of 10mm Celestron Wide Field smooth tops (Brand New haven't seen 1st Light as of yet)
So, would a pair of the 28 RKE's be worthwhile for my Binoviewing or should I just get the single, and any recommendations for other EP pairs would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeffrey G.

I have a pair of D21s as well, and I still bought a pair of the 28mm RKEs just for a different view. At $35 each, why not?

After using my 28mm RKE for three observing sessions I have three things to say.

First, it does give an unique effect of a floating image, which has a certain entertainment value for me.

Second, I do enjoy the curiosity of seeing how that floating image will affect the view of DSOs.

Third, every time I try the RKE, I end up enjoying the view more through my 25mm Sterling Plossl.

I'm not sure that the uniqueness of the view makes up for the actual quality of the image for my viewing tastes.

@mgwittle - I'm going to have to check that comparison out!

@jeffery G. - I'm pretty new as well. But, for a minimal investment like an Orion binoviewer and the cost of an extra EP of your choice versus never knowing... It's worth it. I went the cheap way and I love it.

@doug - I bought a bunch of mid-focal length EPs from SS including the RKE, and even though they're all beat up and of questionable lineage I like the views. Even the 62mm which is a complete mongrel ( the 2 inch tube is a wicked tight fit ) is a fine piece although the eye relief on my AR102 is like 44mm!

Some of these super long focal length eyepieces can give a neat experience with Cats and slow refractors. I have several that I use with my 150mm f/12 Mak.

The only caveats are that the AFOV tends to become pretty narrow as the focal length gets longer, the eye relief might actually be too long for comfort, and the background will become brighter, especially under light pollution.

They are not good for Newts, of course, because they'll make the secondary look like a big black blob in the field of view.

Mike
