Double Stars Database
      #5179951 - 04/19/12 10:00 AM

Hi Folks,

here is my own site, the Double Stars Database: an interface to the Washington Double Stars Catalog (WDS).

Double Stars Database

I wrote it from scratch because I never felt comfortable with the Aladdin interface and searching information from the WDS datafile.
My goals are easy to use, data accuracy and completeness.

I just completed the translation to English (I'm Italian), I need help if you like. Please report me if you find something wrong.

My suggestion is to register and login to use all the features like data filtering based on your telescope's capability.

Thank you for your time.

Gianluca Sordiglioni

Bravo Gianluca!

To me it doesn't save the instrument parameters under Setup/Preferences. I'm using the latest Firefox browser.
Don't know if it's a bug or a problem with my own configuration.

Andrea

That is an excellent tool, Gianluca. I just added a link to it here on a double star blog I write with Greg Stone.

Grazie!

Absolutely wonderful! This makes my planning much more efficient and helps this noob to recognize what I'm looking for when I see it!

Great job. Could not figure out the format of the input for "separation between" - how do you enter for example 1 to 25 arcseconds?

Something that was very needed by double star enthusiasts. Thanks so much for all the hard work.

Thank you so much for your kindly comments.
If there will be enought interest I'll continue to develop new features. For example, inputting reports and measures is quite "basic". Images uploads. Visual simulation. And of course more debugging (I'm aware there is something on "PA now", "RA now" and graph to investingate when orbiting period is expressed in days).

@WRAK: you can't do it right now :-) I disabled this feature. My JavaScript solution was unstable/not compatible with all browsers. It's not my top priority, I'll not spend more time on this issue for a while.
Your question gives me the information you used the Advanced Search feature. Very good!

i cannot successfully register; i get "username: -10"

once debugged you should approach bill hartkopf or brian mason with this utility; if comments above can be trusted, they would welcome it.

Fixed. Thank you Bruce.

A side effect of the Double Stars Database development is I'm forced to check my data, including the WDS. I send email regularly to Brian Mason and he always kindly reply me. Last time I submitted 1600+ magnitude errors on multiple systems.
I think he is aware of this site.

well, bad on them if they don't ask to have it supported via the .gov domain. after all, they control the data.

if what you're calling magnitude errors are discrepancies in the pairwise entries (e.g., AB gives A as 5.0, AC gives A as 5.3) then yes, there are many of those in WDS. unavoidable, since they are typically measures made by different observers, instruments and equipment at different epochs.

i have to do quite a lot of cleaning and cross checking when i prepare my spreadsheet version of WDS, which i do about once a year. i don't mind that, because cleaning is a form of editing (censoring, adjudicating, overwriting) and it's better to have the unedited data always at hand. however it creates unique challenges for a query tool.

thanks for the fix. the lists i examined (including my wm. herschel attributions) look great. i realize that you have a lot on your plate. but an FAQ that explains how to create custom lists would be very helpful.

i worked with SQL PERL query/browser programmers during my internet years and i know what is involved under the hood.

good on ya!

and also azure1961p:
If you issue a "diff" command from one WDS file to another taken in another date, you see so much differencies! At USNO they have a lot to work to do. I think they have no time nor resources left to maintain a search engine. All professional astronomers use Simbad/Aladin/VizieR and that's enought for them. But those tools are not intended for amateur astronomers, and not for double stars works: these are general-purpose search tools expecially good for cross-reference catalogs.
If they will ask me to support them, we will see. For now, it's me to be "beared" by them with my petulant error reports... :-)

yes, it's like what you're saying, but there's more.
A double A was discovered to be Aa: the magnitude reported was in a case the single A flux, in other cases the combined A+a flux, in random order.
In my software I already split in single components all the stars, so it was easy to check them all and compare each other. A week of work, during my Christmas' holidays.
And now errors are detected and corrected. :-)

Check the tool to create your own lists. It's enought powerful in your opinion?

Folks,

I updated the DSD database to the latest WDS release, on july 6.

There's a new software version online, with some bugs fixed and other minor changes.

Bye,
Gianluca

Am I the only one that has trouble downloading the WDS catalog?

Sometimes, I am sooo technically challenged!
