Baader M&SG vs. other neodymium filters? new
      #5179830 - 04/19/12 08:15 AM

I am wondering if anyone has compared the Baader Moon and Skyglow (neodymium) filter to other neodymium filters?

I have always recommended neo filters to folks on CN as the best single filter for Mars and Jupiter. While I routinely try other filters on these two targets, I inevitably ‘settle in’ with my neo filter for any extended viewing of my two favourite planets. I currently use a 1.25” Zhumell ‘Crystalview’ neo filter in my filter slide, and in 2” format have used the glass from 49mm photographic neo filters (“didymium filters” – I have tried the Tiffen Enhancing filter and a Hoya Intensifier filter). Yet despite my affinity for these filters, I have never tried the Baader Moon and Skyglow – possibly the highest quality iteration of the available neo filters.

I am curious if there is a noticeable difference in terms of performance between the Baader and its more generic cousins. I enjoy the views through the three versions I mentioned above, but I am always wondering if the Baader would be superior in terms of optical ‘flatness’, quality of coatings, and/or the strength of filtration, and if so, if these improvements would make much difference at the eyepiece.

Guess not. I thought it was a bit of a shot in the dark...

Perhaps our filter guru David will drop in and offer some insight in this.

The only one I have ever used is the old Sirius Optics NPC Neodymium filter. It is a fairly decent minus-violet filter that keeps down the chromatic aberration of small fast achromats while at least halfway preserving the color balance. I reviewed it about nine years ago (the filter is no longer made):

Clear skies to you.

I've used the Baader 1.25" M&SG for at least five years, then I purchased a Garrett 2.00" MS&G this winter. Based on the limited testing I've done, my impression is that these filters are functionally equivalent, however the filter coatings are obviously different and Garrett's cell construction is a little less refined. Garrett publishes a bandpass diagram for their MS&G which I overlaid with Baader's.... also identical to my eye.

Considering that I paid around $65 for the Garrett, it's a decent alternative to Baader's higher priced filter.
