He was fully aware of the value of these eyepieces as he seemed to know alot about camera lenses zeiss made

I guess i should have been a good sport and told him about the classifieds here and the other site becasue i dont think he thinks there is anywhere else thart will give him the full value he wants for it

He also had a bunch of old celestron catalogues and sky and telescope magazines that were pretty cool 2!!!!!!

That is quite a find. Just this week I picked up a Jaeger's eyepiece off the 'bay because the seller listed it as a microscope eyepiece and no one else bid! I would love to see the whole set. If I had the means I would grab them in an instant!

I'm not sure how we can know if they are the "right ones" when you don't have a photo of the actual eyepieces you are considering.

If you have any doubts about these eyepieces and are asking for help, I would obtain a photo of the actual ones for sale and post it here for advice before I spent $3500.

Did you get the opportunity to hold the eyepieces, remove the end-caps and examine the eyepieces in detail?

I think you have it exactly right, Dan.

I've seen folks brag about their "steals" from Salvation Army, though--even "beating down" the already low asking price. Go figure...

...and of course, always treat astronomy widows with compassion. Give her a fair price on those eyepieces, she might sell you the refractor that's still in the basement, too!

The ZAO-IIs sell for around $3500 a set used. And if I recall correctly, the ZAO-Is were selling used for around $200 each until Roland Christen said what wonderful eyepieces they were. Now the complete set used is around $4000, with only the 34mm being worth around $1000.

A 34mm ZAO recently sold at auction for $1825.

I have the same question. Sounds to me that the guy knows what they are worth and it may not be such a great deal, it maybe be a fair price depending on the condition.

Yup. $3400 for the full set is a good price.

They all said carl zeiss in the white lettering on them and on the other side it had the A before the focal length i am 90 percent sure they are the real deal it was just the cases that were throwing me off

the case didnt say carl zeiss on the front and it wasnt the same finish

and another oddity of the whole deal was that in one set it had all the originals the 4,6,10,16,25 and 34

but......the other set i was able to purchase had a 4,6,10 (18)????? 25 and 34mm

they were all in mint condition except for a few dings on the cases

i am positive that these are legit i just have some uncertainty

That is an absurd price. $1825 for a 34 mm. Abbe Ortho. Really?

Maybe shocking from a practical observing point of view, but maybe not shocking from a collectible standpoint. A 1792 one cent coin that brings over $1 million at auction still buys one piece of penny candy at the corner store.

So you're saying he spent $1825 on an eyepiece to look at!

Maybe not ONLY to look at, but certainly MOST of the perceived value must be as a collectible/investment. Let's say that the market value suddenly plunged to $185. The views through the eyepiece are the same, so that shouldn't matter as long as the owner didn't want to sell it. However, I bet that it would matter - a lot.

I don't know much about Zeiss except seeing the name thrown around with expensive eyepieces. Why doesn't this person or company start remaking these!!!

This ended up being one of those Supply and Demand things.
The 34 was offered as an option in the ZAO-I Sets, one that relatively few took advantage of. And, by all accounts, it is a superb EP, with no peers out there in EP land. Consequently, there is great inherent value there.
I spoke to the seller of this EP after the auction. He stopped the sale when he did, because the bidding had exceeded his expectations. Afterwards, he sustained a barrage of withering criticism from deeply disappointed bidders, who were quite prepared to bid MUCH higher to obtain this EP.
For observers and collectors alike, the 34 has long been undervalued.

The value will not drop any time soon, as there is a finite population of this ocular.

No one is making premium orthos these days. Markus Ludes is however working with Berliner Glass on a new, limited line of no-holds-barred neo-othos, rumored to be a Konig-II design, using ZAO II as a performance benchmark.
But these are months away, if they are ever made - and they won't be the ZAO-I 34mm.

So what are you going to do with all those Abbe Orthos? Unless you are the kind of person with equivalent funds to spend on trucks, trailers, observatories, etc. and you are a big observer, and/or you do a lot of trading on YouTube and the astro sites, I wouldn't buy it. It's is like coming upon a 1954 Rolls Royce with rust and some mouse damage for $6,300. Think about your priorities. Think about buying the complete line of Ethos.

Here's another quote for you -- one I agree with 100%: "Life's too short to drink cheap beer." It's in your signature line. I've had the pleasure of using a 34mm ZAO in good seeing, and I value it differently. John, if you ever get tired of that eyepiece, call me. I don't think you overpaid, and I'm no "collector."
