I don't want to scare you off from continuing work on this project, but I want to make you aware of pitfalls that you can run into. An attempt is being undertaken over in the beginner's Forum to create a similar type list. A beginner's list by a beginner. The result can be rewarding, but might not always turn out that way. These are some comments I posted in that discussion. I'm posting a copy here because this effort is following a parallel path and you might want to be aware of some of the problems you can run in to.

I don't think the idea of a list is a bad idea, but I think the method of execution was a poor approach. The result is you have a thread here in the Beginner's forum with at least two BOLD copies of a preliminary list that jump out right off the page, that are both frought with errors. That won't stop other beginners from printing out those lists and using them.

The top links in this forum provide access to several good resources for the beginner. Most or all are better sources.

I would think anyone attempting to create an observing list (unless it is for your own personal and private use) would take the time to have observed all the objects on the list they create. I believe that is not the case here.

Several good points of advice were given along the path leading to creating this list. They were not followed. Case in point, this list (at least the only copy of it that I can see) still refers to magnitude of these objects, which I will again say is totally misleading. But once again, if you have not observed these objects you wouldn't know that.

I would recommend observing every object you intend to put on the list. Then I would recommend reading at least two different sources to gather information for each object. And I really think that's a bare minimum. I've created a few observing lists. But I've done so from hundreds of field notes and researching dozens of sources.

It may be a great project for you to create such a list, but if that is what you set out to do, you can't just blindly tabulate data, any data, without verifying what the heck it is you are saying. It's got to be correct. You can't depend on everyone else to do that for you. It's your baby. You've got to do the work.

Re: Latest Draft List [Re: EdZ]

EdZ - I have taken your latest comments into consideration, and I have produced the following revised list. The list is still incomplete, but the first two categories are mostly finished.

To all - I have attached the list as a Notepad .TXT file.

Of course, questions, comments and corrections are welcome.
