Lx200 Classic question - tracking w/o alignment?
      #5198978 - 04/30/12 08:09 PM

Weird question - I'd like to bypass the alignment procedure and just turn the scope on and have it run the clock drive in polar mode.

Bottom line - if I want a quick setup, Can I eyeball polaris in the finder, turn on the drive and get down to business.... I used to do this with my manual scopes all the time.

So - is there a way to do this?

Hi Escher,

You mention polar mode. If so you'll need to be mounted on a wedge. If you are not wedge mounted, then you'll need use the Alt/Az mode.
In either case, the scope will need to be roughly aligned at startup. You can do this with a compass and level. (Also if using a wedge, the angle of the mounting plate will need to be appropriately inclined to match your latitude).
Set the scope at 0 declination and 0 RA. And turn it on.

For polar mode with a wedge, send the scope to a known star and perform "sync". This will align with that star and, depending on how good your original rough alignment was, you'll come close to other stars and will track acceptably for visual.
For Alt/Az, do a two star aligmnent and you are (very) good to go for visual.

Hope this addresses your question.

Mark
