Envious of the view you got of M101 in your 10x50s. That must have been quite a pristine sky. I was surprised at your statement that "Mizar turns out to be a true, close-set binary star, but you'll need a telescope to see its companion." Granted it's a challenge for most binoculars, but isn't quite out of reach of most 20x optics. I've barely, and intermittently, split it in my 15x60, and I know of another observer that did so in his 16x70. I've made out M101 several times with my 10x50s, but the most memorable have always been from Stellafane in VT. Good for you with Mizar! That's always eluded me, but now I'll have to try again.
