Fred:
I concur with your conclusion. I would add that rarely are gear books so entertaining to read. Most such works are one step above a Sears catalog; dry and dead. Neil's prose is lively, the details are vivid and plentiful, and the work engaging at whatever level the reader chooses to delve. Not interested or capable of comprehending the math? Breeze through it to the next bit and dig in.
I'd really like to see Neil take on an observing guide next. Something to entertain and inform those who've taken his advice on what sort of telescope to purchase and now would like creative suggestions on what to view with it.
Regards,
Jim

Refractors: A challenging subject (and a sometimes quite emotive one for refractor enthusiasts)...and I believe Neil's book tackles it in an excellent way (and not just because my scope is in there ).
From the review: Quote:
The read can be quick, or one can dwell on specifics where unfamiliarity is encountered.
I noticed this too. Regardless of whether you blast through it quickly, or absorb every detail...Neil's 'friendly' writing style feels you leaving rewarded either way.
