Stellarium 0.11.2: Stars below horizon gone
      #5224589 - 05/16/12 03:01 AM

This is not critical, but why do stars below the horizon no longer display with Stellarium 0.11.2? I see no option (or config.ini line) to turn them on.

I also use hnsky and CdC. Both display stars below the horizon.

If I've missed any comments or posts about this development, I apologize.

They show up for me, if I turn off the ground...

Because of the atmospheric refraction/extinction modelling - the algorithms break down for angular elevation under the horizon.

To see the stars, turn off the atmosphere (default toggle keu is A).

OOPS! I meant to post this query in the Astronomy Software and Computers forum.

I should have added that I see no stars below the horizon with ground, fog and atmosphere turned off.

I'm using 0.11.2, and the stars are visible below ground with atmosphere and ground turned off... have you tried using different projections, changing the LP values, etc.? If nothing else, perhaps a re-install is in order.

Earlier today I did a re-installation of my download. It didn't fix the "problem."

I've partially fixed the "problem." I lowered the extinction coefficient to zero. However, I can't save the extinction coefficient at zero. I don't see any line in the config.ini file for the extinction coefficient.

I could try another download of 0.11.2, but I'm inclined to think that if the download I have is corrupted, I wouldn't have been able to install 0.11.2.

Did another (complete) re-installation. Problem fixed by editing my config.ini file:

[astro]
...
flag_extinction_below_horizon = false
...

Maybe this flag command was there before. Maybe it wasn't.

I'm curious; with atmospheric extinction enabled, do the stars become reddened nearer the horizon? I ask because in reality they do, in a manner not so different from interstellar extinction. In my own crude software with which I create illustrations for some of my magazine articles I've added the option to do this. The effect is pretty realistic looking.

Looking at the program this moment, and I don't believe this effect is included in Stellarium, Glenn - it would certainly be a nice added touch.

Interesting. Generally, I appreciate flexibility and choices for display in a planetarium program.

BTW, thanks for the replies.

However, I'm still wondering why I had to edit my config.ini file. Those who replied that the stars below the horizon were there with ground, fog and atmosphere turned off did not mention the flag command to disable extinction below the horizon. I'm puzzled. Do I have a slightly different version of 0.11.2? I downloaded on 2 May.

I'm not all that conversant with the ins-and-outs of the program, Todd, so couldn't even begin to answer regarding configuration, but FWIW I DL'ed my copy of 0.11.2 sometime in early April of this year, IIRC.

There may be a compatibility problem when using the new EXE file with an old INI file. You could rename the INI to something else then reinstall and see if the new INI will work correctly.

I did a complete re-installation and I now have 0.11.2 running according to my preferences. Now that version 0.11.3 is on the way, I will remember your suggeston or just delete the main configuration file when prompted during the next installation. A complete re-installation was probably not necessary.
