Tak FC76 on P2 mount, 1982
      #5230281 - 05/19/12 10:16 PM Attachment (102 downloads)

Okay, so I picked this Tak fluorite refractor up at a pawn shop in Rialto. If anybody remembers when I bought the Mayflower in Echo Park, from the guy who originally wanted to trade for a rifle, this place was weirder than that! The shop had bars on the windows and doors, and when you stepped inside the front door, you were in a cage. The guy behind the counter had to push a button to let you out of the cage.

Anyway, I gave the scope a going over, tried to talk him down a bit on his asking price of $1K (as a matter of principle, of course!), and ended up agreeing on $900 plus tax, which put it almost at his asking price.

I just set it up, and am waiting for the sun to go down. There are a few things I'll need to tend to when I get home, but for now it's functional. First, some pics:

Okay, few things:

*the cool chrome knob that holds the counterweight is broken. I have several Tak counterweights with this screw at home for my EM-10, so I can use one of those while I look for a replacement.

*one of the finder scope screws is broken off in the bracket. The broken screw and nut is in the case.

*the screw-on cap for the center of the lens cap appears to be missing.

*That odd plug in the polar scope does come out and the polar finder does appear intact - yay! So I'll take that plug out and put the green plastic cap back on.

*Came with the Tak star diagonal and 3 orthoscopic eyepieces - 7, 12.5, and 25mm. No barlow. .965 only.

-Tim.

Tim, great catch! I hope to own a Tak one day. There's an astrograph about two hours away, but WAY out of my budget.

Saturn is gorgeous! The only hybrid diagonal is a plastic one that came with a
90s tasco 60mm. At least the prism is glass! So I'm using that so I can use a favorite UO flat top 6.8mm ortho, that seems to show the
Most detail without losing contrast too much.

The mount
Is very stable. I can keep the planet centered while holding the ra cable and not jiggle the image.

Just switched back to the tak .965 diagonal and 7mm ortho and I like that combo the best. First time I've ever used quality .965 eyepieces! They're quite good!

It also has a very nice polar finder, but with just two rings to the reticle. Took very little time to get good alignment. The illuminator is missing. It's a separate part, like it is for my NJP mount. For the NJP, I just turn on my cell phone and hold it near enough to see the reticle without washing out the sky.

About the RA control knob. Not only was I able to hold onto it while viewing, and not shake the telescope, but I was able to rest my arm on the tripod cap while holding the knob, still without shaking the scope!

I'm going to put some mylar over it for the eclipse today.

-Tim.

I forgot to comment on the finder. It's not only huge, it's very nice too!

It needs repainting, though. Abundant chips from the alignment screws. Probably mainly from having the one broken off. When I got the scope, the finder was loose. I finger tightened the screws so I could align it. Since the broken screw was still in there, it was possible to adjust the other 5.

-Tim.

Tim,

That is a fantastic scope, congratulations! The FC 76 on the P2 is such a nice classic scope. It's performance on anything within it's lightgrasp is stunning. I had my first view through one of these in 1989. Could not believe the clarity of the image.

Hi Tim,

I'm glad one of us got it. If I had an extra $1,000 I would have bought (okay, instead of posting about first!).

LGM

PS. Do I get a finders' ,,,,not a fee, but a peek?
