Some of you might recall my Super Moon image over the downtown cityscape of Toronto from a few weeks hence. I wasn't able to replicate that last night because the Sun & Eclipse set due West. I drove a little under a 100 miles to the town of Niagara on the Lake to get the image I wanted, the Annular Eclipse of 2012 over the waters of Lake Ontario.
Hopefully most people will realize Canada is not the Arctic wasteland of sterotypes. Niagara on the Lake is at the same latitude as the wine producing regions of France and is renowned for its Icewine and the Shaw Festival. Anybody driving through last evening could have thought they had been in the Napa Valley, except for all the historic monuments denoting battlefields with the invading Americans during the War of 1812 (oops!) Yes, Canada did fight a war with the US and this summer marks the 200th anniversary!
Anyway I really digressed, first contact was at 8:18 and could only be digitally captured with a white light solar filter, the ccd did not have the dynamic range to cope with the unfiltered glare. Interestingly, my eye was able to see it through the viewfinder such was the horizon hugging haze. The first two suns in the mosaic were though solar filter, Canon T2i and 200mm L series lens. The last two are unfiltered. Eclipse ended with setting sun below the horizon at 8:38.

Thanks Andy for posting, there've been so many eclipse images that people are probably tired of looking through them. The advantage to not being on the eclipse center path is that you dont forget the cardinal rule of photography and that is framing the subject.
