See you at NEAIC new
      #5187334 - 04/23/12 11:58 PM

Hi everyone,

Just a follow up from my post a few weeks ago. This is Don Murray from Point Grey - this is our first time exhibiting at NEAIC (and we won't be exhibiting at NEAF this year unfortunately). I just wanted to give people a heads up of what we will be showing off.

- Flea3 ice-cube sized camera with the Sony ICX618 VGA 1/4" CCD sensor which runs at 120 fps
- Grasshopper2 camera with Sony ICX285 1.4MP 2/3" CCD sensor which runs at 30 fps and also has extended shutter modes (up to 90 minutes) and low-noise mods tuned for long shutters (low power for less thermal and turned off amp to reduce amp glow)
- low cost Chameleon USB 2.0 1.3MP camera using the Sony 1/3" ICX445 CCD

I'll also have a new-addition high sensitivity 2.8MP ICX674 2/3" CCD Grasshopper Express that I can run for anyone that is interested and some news about what's coming.

"Not good enough!", you say? I'll also have 50% off coupons for anyone purchasing cameras through our webstore (only valid in North America).

Anyway, its our first time there, so looking forward to learning a lot!

Hope to see you there!
Don

Good question - I'm not 100% sure. At the time the decision was made, we weren't very clear on the difference between events, and we were approaching this as a "dip your toe in the water" experiment as we have not exhibited at an astronomy show before. So the decision was made based pretty much on what the website said alone.

I'll be attending NEAF (but not exhibiting) so I'll be able to report back on it, as well as NEAIC, and hopefully next year we'll have a more educated decision making process.

Don

@Alan - lets talk about it at NEAIC if you have a chance to drop by the exhibits.

@Bilgebay - pretty much all the cameras we have that are of interest to astrophotographers are sold through the webstore, so the coupon includes Flea2, Flea3, Grasshopper2, Grasshopper Express and Chameleons. Firewire, USB 2, USB 3 or GigE too.

Really good question since there are no prices in their "webstore", not even after clicking "details" for an item! How do they expect consumers to consider their products? Makes no sense.

It costs me time to register yet another unwanted web account, check the reply, then go back and login. It cost them $2500 of my camera budget so far. What kind of company holds its own prices hostage for the ransom of an email address?

I have to agree with this in regards to registration. I almost bought a DMK, but I decided to register just to see how much the PGR's were. Based on specs, I really had assumed they were well over my budget, but when I saw the price of the Chameleon, I jumped on it immediately. Then, it showed up the next day. I couldn't be happier, I just wish I did it earlier; which I know I would've if it wasn't for the registration.

To give you a statistical example, I deal with a furniture company that used to require users to register before letting them do a local dealer look-up. They liked getting the names and addresses for mailing list purposes. When they eliminated the registration requirement, the number of inquiries increased 600%. But, even better, the number of users who also requested to be on their mailing list also increased. Interest creates interest!

See you guys at NEAF, wish I was at NEAIC!

Guys, thanks for the feedback regarding pricing on the webpage, I do understand where you are coming from. I will make sure the head of Marketing sees this.

I will be exhibiting Saturday (today!) only at NEAF as well - last minute change in plans So if you are there, look for me... ok, gotta get over there myself.

Don

It would nearly have been worth me flying to the US to get a coupon!
