I'm practicing to get ready for the Transit of Venus, and here is a shot I got on the 22nd. The setup was with my Canon T1i attached to a 5-inch f/6.4 refractor (which I built, using a lens that I think originally came from the Surplus Shed). I used Three Baader filters: AstroSolar Photo Film, and 2-inch IR/UV cut and Solar Continuum filters were screwed to the front of an Astro-Tech Field Flattener.

I'd welcome any comments or suggestions.

Here's a 100% crop of one section. It is not as sharp as an image I made with this scope and a PGR Chameleon, but I think that's the result of this being an inexpensive scope, and a one shot image with a DSLR. Am I right in thinking that? Of course, this was the sharpest of more than a dozen that I took, and focusing was not easy (though the fine focus knob was very nice to have.)

Not sure about the correction in your scope. Chromatic aberration isn't an issue if using the Solar Continuum filter together with UV/IR cut as the combination is nearly monochromatic, and very close to the optimum wavelength for chromatic aberration in a "visual" doublet. Spherical aberration might be an issue with a fast objective but if it works better with the Chameleon it's probably OK.

Single shot images tend to suffer from bad seeing, that doesn't make focusing easy either. I'd wager that's a good part of the issue. Try taking a dozen & aligning & stacking them - helps keep the noise down too. But one-shot colour cameras - like DSLRs - are always going to struggle with images in (essentially) monochromatic light as only a few of the pixels are active - about half in the green where the SC filter transmits.

Thanks! Would DeepSkyStacker be a sensible program to use for stacking solar images from a DSLR, or is there something better (and cheap or free) out there?

Avistack, Registax, AutoStakkert2 ... all free to use. Personally I find Avistack does the best job on surfaces (lunar or solar) but it does have a steepish learning curve, and it's slow - IMO the results more than make up for that issue. There are loads of tutorials on Registax out there. AS2 is gaining a good name, it's fast but I never feel in control of it.

I've not tried Registax with large images. It can process DSLR shots of many megabytes?

I don't really have much time before the Transit, and I'm familiar with Registax. Even if it's not the best, it will do if it works, and I can always use the raw data with something else later.

I thought of something else: Since, as you say, only about half the pixels are being used, would I be better off without the continuum filter on the DSLR?

I've never tried solar with that type of gear, but I'd say this look quite good. Nice work!

Regards,

Bob

Thanks, Bob! I like it, too. Still, I'm always hoping for improvement.
