Will a .965 to 1.25 inch compression ring adapter work ok with microscope eyepieces with 23.2mm barrels? Will there be too much "play"?

There will be too much play. 0.965" is 24.5mm. You can build up the barrel of the eyepiece with a bit of ordinary household tape. This can work well, if done carefully.

Clear skies!

Use metallic duct tape. Cut the tape into strips to fit the length of the eyepiece barrel. I've built up the barrel of microscope eyepieces with good results in this way. It is very durable and looks good.

Have done this, to great effect! But be forewarned- it definitely has a "home-brew" effect, which will make selling the EPs in the future (should you ever decide to try ) a challenge.

Another trick i've used is to find a couple of those old-style 35mm plastic film canisters, and cut their barrel bottom-ends as required to suit. In the photo below, the micro-barrels fit into the "sleeves" perfectly to the hilt, and they snug into my BVer's collets like they were made for it! A li'l double-stick tape inside ensures the EPs *stay* in the sleeves. 'Tis a very "clean" solution!

Elegant and low cost; nice!

Thanks!

The frugality doesn't end there, either. The eyeguards are Starman inspired... bike innertube segments, doubled over & fitted onto the barrels- adjust to height desired. A humble fix, fersure, but works really well.

I've discovered by accident that ordinary kid's posterboard cut into strips will fill the gap in 0.965-1.25" adapters, if carefully wrapped around the eyepiece with no overlap. I use a pair of 20x (12.5 mm) microscope eyepieces in my Baader Maxbright, wrapped in posterboard, alignment is perfect.

Having never sold an eyepiece, the thought of resale value never crosses my mind! My prime motivation is a fix that works well. Some of the best improvements to my scopes and accessories have involved black foam core, Velcro, foam sheeting, wire screen and Gorilla Glue.

The metallic duct tape works very well. I doubt very much if anything works better, short of hiring a machinist for beaucoup d'argent. To me, the metallic tape looks good, too.

I suppose if I were to sell an eyepice that was taped, it wouldn't be difficult to remove and clean up with Goo Gone.

Mike
