Ok, just before the hate starts piling in response to my post I want to make it clear that I respect everybody's work here on CN because they are all products of love. Love for this passion that is astrophotography.
I'm starting to see the major astro publications pick their favourite images from the past eclipse ... and they go for the easy choice. The Ring of Fire image. Except its the image that shows the least creativity ... one could easily make one using Photoshop in under a minute, under half a minute.
You know the image, the round Sun almost covered by a dark round Moon and closely cropped to reveal no sky or context. Now I know somebody had to take the pains to get to the center line to grab this image but there are others who either don't have the means or the time to chase eclipses and can only image from their home base. Some of these imagers have actually taken the time to consider and compose their partial eclipse images and produce a work that has artistic merit as well. But it seems like all everybody celebrates is the ring of fire image.
Am I being too harsh? Or do the editors of these publications always choose the safe choice? I welcome the opportunity to have my opinion enlightened and possibly changed.

I agree with you, I guess someone could do a ring of fire with photoshop. I can't say I ever get tired of seeing a genuine ring of fire image, but there are a lot of imagers out there that get creative with backgrounds or landscapes. That's when the creative artwork of their talent comes into play. Now I'm waiting patiently for the excellent images of the Sun/Venus transit to come out. I will be able to see it visually next week, but an image is way better. David

Nothing boring about a "ring of fire" shot thru solar scope with H-a filter. Proms, filaments and spots...oh my.
White light filter just doesn't show as much.
