Venus 4th June. 34 hours before transit!
      #5254727 - 06/04/12 01:44 PM Attachment (87 downloads)

Hello

Well between passing showers I managed to observe Venus this afternoon, only two degrees from the sun and 34 hours before mid transit.

I am pretty pleased with that feat, but a little sad that I couldn't actually scrutinise the planet properly.
I used a 30mm eyepiece to locate the sun, then setting circles to offset to Venus. The sky was so bright that Venus was mostly invisible to me even with filters, but every now and then it would present itself as an incredibly thin crescent barely brighter than the sky. Sadly every time I tried to centre it and change the eyepiece I would loose it and have to start again, so 40X was the highest power used. Still, two degrees from the sun is pretty good!

I was hoping to see a very extended crescent well over 180 degrees, but the sky was so bright that I think I could only see the brightest part of the crescent and it looked to be barely more than the usual half a ring.

Chris,

Quite an observation under very difficult conditions--congratulations!

Chris,

This is an impressive sketch considering how close to the sun Venus was at the time of your sketch.

Frank

Chris,

A beautiful observation of a very thin Crescent Venus noted before the transit. It must have been a feat to detect the planet in a bright sky. Your Mars observations have also been outstanding. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Thanks all, I thought this one would be buried by all the transit images by now!
There is a photo of a full ring of Venus' atmosphere in the imaging section, which is totally awesome.
One day I hope to see that visually, but I suspect I will need better skies and some sort of very long sun shade to keep the sun out of the telescope tube.

The view did get dramatically better when the sun went behind a cloud, but of course that meant the atmosphere above me was all in shade too, not just my telescope.

Oh boy, that is a very spectacular observation. I like it.
