What is the favorite night vision mode for your planetarium software? I am thinking of the best way to preserve night vision; simply night vision mode (not permitted in some viewing spots)? Red acrylic filter? White and black screen with red acrylic? Default with red acrylic? Special or custom Windows theme?

On my Win7 netbook I use a custom High Contrast Theme with everything in as red as possible, a acrylic from Astro Gizmos, and a software called KnightVision http://www.knightware.biz/knightvision/knightvision.htm
In night mode in Stellarium and with all three things going at once it's relly pretty good.

I have acrylic from AstroGizmos, but IME it's not dark enough. Anytime you can see colors other than red through a screen, it's still too bright. Even with my Asus EEE tablet's brightness setting turned to minimum, the AstroGizmo stuff is too bright.
Rubylinth is darker, but it doesn't stick to the tablet's screen as well as AstroGizmos, so I use a layer of both together. It's not perfect, but I've yet to see any solution that is.

Another vote for the Astro Gizmos acrylic and the Knight Vision software.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is an eqivalent of Knight Vision for Android tablets, unless you want to fiddle with "rooting," and I would prefer not to.
I have a mini-laptop, but IME & IMO it is still too heavy and cumbersome for easy use at the telescope. I like to have a device that's small and light enough that I can comfortably hold it near the telescope for an extended period of time. No jumping back and forth to a computer on a table for me.

I put a netbook size 1/2" plywood board onto a cheap camera tripod to carry my netbook. I can position it close at hand at any height or tilt.
The elastic bands hold it to the board.

Brian,
Good idea. I'm thinking about ordering a mounting bracket for my tablet so I can keep it on a tripod close to me. If I were to attach the tablet to a parallelogram mount on a tripod I'd probably get maximum flexibility, but that may be overkill for the purpose.
How does your arrangement work out for you? Is it pretty ease to move the tripod around and adjust for height and tilt? It has got to be much better than holding the netbook in your hand or jumping back and forth to a table.

Very easy to move and adjust. The whole thing with netbook weighs 3-4 lbs. I got the tripod at Wal-Mart for, I think, $20. Very light duty, but good enough.
