Patch for solar observing? new
      #5228507 - 05/18/12 03:05 PM

Has anyone patched the 497 allowing goto and tracking rate change for solar observing with the 497?

Gday Mark

There isnt a patch as such for gotos, but there is a technique to enter an asteroid that is in effect an "anti Earth". Ref Weasners site for full details.
Every time you "goto" it, the Sun gets in the way :-).
( Remember to cover all finders etc securely )

There is a patch that allows you to adjust the "tracking rate" manually in steps of 0.01% of sidereal but there is no specific "solar tracking" patch.

Andrew

Thanks i was thinking maybe meade had put something out. The asteroid hack will have to do then. Thanks a bunch!

Ok, I have a curiosity question. If you set up your goto telescope (I have the etx90) and just do the align as normal, though of course you just allow it to slew and accept where it goes as aligned. Slew to the sun, wouldn't it just track as it does with other objects? At night I don't necessarily have to "goto" a object to track right. I just slew around where I want to view sometimes. I'm sure there is something about it....like it's the center of our universe or something

Solar rate is a bit different.

I look up the Sun's position and enter it as a user defined object.

All methods will work as the scope will track no matter how you point at the sun (excl releasing clutches if AltAz)
In a std Autostar, setting the tracking rate to -3
will be the closest approximation for the true Solar rate.

Is it -3 in both hemispheres or is it negative in the Southern and positive in the Northern?

Gday Chris

-3 for both, as we want to "slow down" the scope.
The entered value is a pure "rate adjuster".
Once tracking its just applied to the base motor rate
ie New rate = sidereal rate * ( 1 + Rate/100 )
The sidereal rate already includes the sign for Hemi.

This is more of a "cheat," than a patch. I used my ETX-60 to watch the Venus transit, by following Venus. I was happy!
