APM Lzos 115 f7 LW Super APO
      #5270923 - 06/14/12 10:17 AM

I have had and used an APM Lazos 115mm f7 apo for may years. I am getting ready to retire and am thinking about thinning the herd of scopes I have accumulated over the years. The 115 is one of the scopes I am considering selling. This is a very high quality color free APO a that also can be used with binoviewers without the necessity of additional correcting optics due to back focus. This scope is extremely expensive if purchased new today (over$4k). However, with the influx of less expensive Asian APOs I have no idea what the scope will be worth on the used market or how to price it. The scopes condition is excellent, and would include rings, finder, case and test report. Any input or help you can offer would be much appreciated.
Mike

I would look around at all the comparable +/- a few mm's on the new market, then search on AstroMart history for same... add in what you already know about current replacement cost for 'same item', consider condition and etc. (Also consider that what something listed for may not be what the final selling price was) If you have time, start at whatever your high $ figure is and see if any interest? Not a great economy to be selling into, and there are those that go for quantity, those that go for quality, and all inbetween... if your price if fair you'll find a new owner, if it's low you'll find even more. Having good current pictures of the scope and optics always a great idea as serious buyers will want to see them. All the usual stuff. APM and LZOS are known quantities so you are in good company there.

While using the average astromart.com price is a good idea, bear in mind that you can still sell yours for more than the average market price. E.g., C9.25s typically sell for $700. I sold mine for $950. Why: it had fans installed and, more importantly, it came with an assurance of quality. I had a Roddier test report that showed it be 1/30 RMS and plenty of samples of planetary imaging done with it.

Regards,

Tanveer.

Do you have the test report paperwork?

Sorry, I just reread your first post-you do possess the test report. So what is the strehl? What is the serial number on the lens? And finally, it's a 2 inch Feathertouch then?

Moonglum:
The serial number is #150, Date of testing was 3/16/04, 115mmf7,
Strehl Ratio .969. I also have the Russian inspection report but since it is in Russian, I have no idea what it says.

Well the strehl ratio is pretty much bang on average for that scope. Not a good thing and not a bad thing, right in the middle. I would say about 30 of these scopes have been sold second hand on that other site since the scope's inception back in 2002 or so. With the 2 inch Featertouch they sold for between $3300 and 2600, quite the range really. One thing you have going for it is it's age, that being '04. This scope would have passed through Tom Back's hands and is definately worth mentioning when you advertize. If the case is also in excellent shape feel confident in listing it at $3200 and don't go below 3K...at least at first. If you get no real offers just relax and try again in 6 months for a $3000 listing and then wiggle a bit, but not much. This is all just my opinion obviously, but keep in mind this ota is currently listed new in Germany for $4500 euros.
I bought number 104 three years ago for $2800. It has a couple of tiny paint chips on the tube, really *BLEEP* rings, prestine glass and a test report of 98.7. One of the set screws on the extension tube that held the 2 inch focuser was stripped (this was not disclosed to me at sale), so I upgraded to 2.5 inch with 3.5 inch draw. I was actually considering selling this scope till I saw Saturn with it about a month ago with Maxbrights and 12mm anniversary Brandons at about 170X. I won't be selling. Saturn's rings had the texture of a record album. It was um...rather eye-opening.
The best thing about the scope is it's convenience-what it's capable of for it's size.

Moon:
Thanks for the info. I am having some heartburn when I think of parting with this scope. It is so flexible in its usage whether with binos or a single eyepiece. It is also amazing in the planetary views it gives. But, I find myself using my TEC140 or the 9.25 Edge HD I recently purchased. I am fortunate to have accumulated such fine instruments over the years.

I had to sell it nearly for 40% of the price after 2 years, this "super mega apo".

Note: flattener included as a present, so it was something like 30% of the price.

Great scope. Selling prices in the past 5 years from $2400-3400, with the high Strehl (98%+) units doing better, not so sensitive to accessories & etc.

Good luck!

If I wanted to have the optics cleaned before selling, does anyone know where or to whom I should send the scope? I certainly am not interested in shipping it to APM in Germany.
Mike
