Looking forward to OSP also.
My star party lineup this year:
Goldendale, TMSP, OSP, maybe fall Camp Deleny

OSP is great, but a remote environment for a family trip.

Wish I could do the whole week like you.

Next year I should make it back to Golden State SP as it is likely to conflict with TMSP.

Have you ever been to Texas SP? I'd like to go but 1900 miles from Seattle us a long haul

Myles

OSP question. I have camped at the last 4 Golden State Star Parties with my 5x8 cargo trailer. Can I park my trailer, camp, observe and image all in the same place? I will ask for the OSP week off tomorrow. If vacation request is approved I will do both the GSSP and OSP this year.

Is there any problems camping at the OSP site the weekend before or do people camp somewhere else before the OSP starts?

Although I'm not intimately familiar with OSP rules I think I can answer a couple of peoples' questions.

OSP is on national forest land, so anyone can camp there before and after the official event. During the event OSP has an exclusive license to use the property, so it can demand that people who are not registered leave the area.

It's perfectly OK to camp, image or view and park all in the same place; really, I'm not aware that anyone does anything else. As far as I know, the only restrictions on where a guy camps pertain to RVs. RVs must be parked in certain designated areas. All other areas are open to tent campers, converted vans and tent trailers. Although I'm not 100% sure, I believe a 5 X 8' cargo trailer would be allowed anywhere.

OSP maintains an excellent web site. Among other topics, it contains a couple of varieties of maps which lay out RV areas and the complete regulations.

As for me, I may have to skip OSP this year. Family problems have unexpectedly reduced my work time this spring/summer by several weeks and I think I won't be able to take off the time.

As far as I know there are no rules about camping at the site early. You just have to be careful about where you set up so that you don't interfere with the roped off areas. Most of the set up starts on the Saturday before so you shouldn't have any problems. Also you will be able to put your trailer anywhere you want and you will have much more room to spread out. You will think you died and went to heaven.

What do people usually do at OSP for power? Bring a big battery and generator to charge the battery during the day?

That's one way to do it. You could also use solar panels to charge during the day. I take two power tanks and usually get at least three nights each so charging isn't really an issue. It really depends on how much power you require...

I have 240 watts of solar on the roof of my 5x8 cargo trailer. I feed a pair of 6 volt Trojan 220 amp-hour deep cycle batteries using the SunSaver 15 MPPT controller. I just add distilled water about 3 times a year to the battery bank.

If you don't have a trailer you could use a single deep cycle battery (80-130 amp/hours) feed by a single 100-120 amp panel and be set. The panel could set on the ground with a couple of poles holding it up towards the south. A PWM or MPPT controller would be needed to properly charge the battery. PWM controllers are available for under $100, the best small MPPT controller is the SunSaver 15 MPPT. It costs about $215-225 and will allow the use of larger 24 volt panels that can cost as little as $1.10 a watt. For about $550 you could have a very good 230 watt system that would put in up to 15 amps/hour back into your battery in full sun. This is much quieter and cheaper than even the best quiet generators (Honda EU2000i). You also don't have to worry about dealing with gas.

Thanks for the feedback on field power. I will have to think about what I want to do. Since I don't usually image in remote locations, I'm not sure I want to spend $500 on a power setup if I'm only going to use it once a year.

Hi

we will not know about generator use until right before OSP. It is a forest service call that is made regarding the fire hazard. You can bring one but there is a chance that you may not get to turn it on

John

Well you could by a 95 watt 12 volt panel for $200 + $90 for the solar charge controller. After the voltage drop from 18.5 down to 14.6 by the PWM controller you would get about 5 amps/hour into your battery. That would still be enough to recharge after a night of imaging. I use the larger system because I am also powering a freezer, fans, trailer lights, personal swamp cooler.

I have 1 115Ah deep cycle plus a dual purpose battery (kind of a semi-deep cycle battery) I can run a QHY8 ccd and a mount for two nights off the deep cycle, and use the second battery to bolster the laptop's battery. I have a generator and battery charger to charge during the day if need be, but I've been able to squeek through two nights without it.

if I ran two mounts, two ccd's, and two laptops, might only make it through one night

Thanks guys. I need to buy a cheapo power meter to see how much power my setup is using. Then I can figure out what I need in terms of batteries and whether I will need to recharge it. I'm hoping I can get two nights of imaging froma single battery and do visual the other nights.

We're looking forward to OSP again this year.

I thought that I'd jump in regarding power. We bought our motorhome with star parties in mind about 10 years ago. At the time we bought it, I had it set up with 4 golf cart batteries that give us about 440ah power. When you can run a generator, they'd charge up pretty quickly after a night's imaging. There was a run of years a while ago where the Forest Service banned generator use due to fire conditions. With the above setup and no ability to charge, we were getting about 4 nights of imaging.

3 or 4 years ago, I changed my schedule so that I could spent more time at each of the star parties that we attend. In the case of OSP, I like to arrive no later than the Saturday ahead of the event (and possibly a few days even earlier than that if the weather and my work schedule look good).

To deal with the extended time and the possibilty of generator bans, I added solar charging to the motorhome. I've got 390 watts of panels on the roof, with the same bank of batteries. With this setup, I can run indefinitely - and even let the kids use their laptops and watch movies during the day. I find that I need about 100ah from the solar panels. This is with two laptops, an ST-10 and a guide camera. I also have 3 small deep cycle batteries that power several mounts. I charge these daily from the motorhome.

My motorhome's generator is pretty quiet, and it never bothered me before. But I have to say that solar is really easy to get used to. I love not having to use the generator. The only time I ever start it now is if we want to use the microwave (so maybe 10 to 15 minutes a day when not banned).

Jeff, regarding your questions about camping and such, I think that you will be quite happy with the arrangement. Early arrival is no problem. By Monday, there will be quite a few people up there (including me). Last year, there were people on site a full two weeks early. You will have plenty of space to set up your imaging and observing rigs. I do both visual and imaging as well.

For the last few years, I have been setting up camp near the loop, on the east side of the road. I have a few friends that set up in the imaging area and I've been spending quite a bit of time there. This year I think that I've going to go ahead and set up there.

Jeff, if you want to set up in the imaging area as well, it's on the south side of the entry road, just past the turn off to the loop. By Monday, there will likely be a couple of motorhomes and trailers there already.

This will be the 25th anniversary of OSP. We've been regulars since 2001 and are really looking forward to it.

Here's a picture of our site from 2010, before it got busy (or after most people left; I stayed late that year). It seems that all of my site pictures from 2011 were taken on one of the thunderstorm nights.

-Wade

Just registered... this will be our 3rd time. Glad to be coming back - last year we cancelled as our friend's asthma was affected by the fires and we were in the middle of house remodel that was distracting.

Had a great time at OSP 3 years back - shorts and t-shirt one night all the way until 1AM. That year I was lucky enough to drag the family to Golden State, Table and the OSP.

Next year we will be back at Golden State and Table Mountain.

Jeff - not sure if we ever met, but I think we conversed about our SV 115 in the forums a few times.
maybe will see you there.

- Myles

Myles,

I think we may have meet at the GSSP in 2009. That was the year I got my SV115T. Did you have it on a Discmount? My wife was able to come the last to times to the GSSP. I will miss her company this time. She started as a new RN a couple of weeks ago. Since she couldn't take a hike with me in August like usual I decided to attend the OSP also. I have a new imaging rig so I am glad to get 10 dark sky imaging nights in the next two months.
