Holy XXXX! I did not realize what I was looking at earlier today in that photo and that it is on a G-11! James, as a G-11 user can I ask what the weight is of that I-Star OTA? BTW, Did you see the last part of the Venus transit there in Singapore

Hi Pete.
The 8" ISTAR bare OTA is 45 lbs. The ISTAR massive mounting rings and my specially machined dovetail is at least 15 lbs. If consider the whole OTA with focuser, diagonal, finder, eye piece, is almost 70 lbs.
My G11 losmandy with G2, is at its max capacity limit of 60 lbs, so is only suitable for visual.
In Singapore, we are supposed to have more than 5 hrs of window time for this Venus transit. But unfortunately, the cloudy sky only clears up at around 10.30am, and we are left with only 2hrs , which can can see the final 2 contacts point, whereby Venus exits from the Sun.... I really enjoyed this major side walk event, with long queues of people waiting for their turn to see this once in a life time event......

For the VT here we were at the opposite end just seeing the first part. It was cloudy here (Delaware, US) and I decided not to go to our club's gathering point. But I understand there was a 20 min window from a good friend and I will regret not making the short trip to check it out until the end of my days. Bless you for doing the sidewalk set up there. I can imagine your scope is quite a draw.

Hi Pete...
Yes, and that's why I bring the 8" refractor , instead of my other bigger SCT....
Even my friend sent me the following email after the event:-
Dear James,
I was extremely impressed and in fact touched by your personal approach for those audiences queuing up at your telescope. ( by the way, you had the longest queue )
Allowing them to take pictures of the telescope as well as taking pictures of the transit via the viewing lens.
Thanks a lot

Rinaldo,
Love your combo of scopes. I have fond memories of my own A-P EDFS 130 f/6. And that 12.5" Portaball just looks gorgeous. Is that a new model with the blue rim and stand?

I just acquired this Orion ED80 CF, yesterday from the same source as my ES127 ED. I had planned to do white light with the ES127, but the Sun is so high these days, was on my knees to view, most of the time. The Orion is so much easier to set up and it will allow me to use in more locations, now I'm forced to wait till after 3 to see the Sun and by 6, it's covered by trees. Now I can move to my front yard and view from 11am an earlier.
Was able to use at powers over 130, but around 100, was the best.

Here are several pictures of some of my boys....I will call them "boys" as one is a Milo (the 3" f/18.4 with grab ring) and the other is the Antares 105mm with 1500 mm focal length. Antares is a male name too.
These scopes have been pictured before but I show them again to illustrate a storage solution that I recently installed in my walk-in "Man Cave" closet. A convenient storage area for some of my train stuff, model stuff and telescope stuff. I got some vinyl clad brackets at $1.75 each from my local Ace Hardware and located the wall studs. On opposite sides of the room above additional closet openings are the two pair of brackets, each pair is spaced 32" apart, perfect for these two scopes. Each bracket is rated to 20 lbs., or up to a max of a 40 lb. load. Each of these is no more than about 10 to 12 lbs with cradles attached.
As the brackets are vinyl clad, I have isolated the telescope tubes from direct contact with the vinyl using some paper towels. Does not look that great with the paper towels, but it does the job. By having these two scopes up on the wall it frees up a lot of floor space in the "Man Cave" proper.

Great looking scopes. I think I would replace the paper towels with some pipe insulation as it would be easier to just leave on the brackets. Something tells me those paper towels are a pain to keep in place while placing the telescope in it's cradle.

Barry My sentiments exactly, well almost living in shaky town means the dove tail is hanging on lags and the straps are a safety device. 6" F15 Jaegers, 9 baffles, with a 6" Unitron Tailpiece and superfocuser.

The Superplanetary is listed at 14 lbs. I did a crude weight standing on a scale and taking the difference (OTA had the rings and dovetail) and it looked about 18lbs. It's a great construction. The newer AP design for the Dew shield would be nice and maybe an updated focuser; but I plan to use it as is. The following night I had great views of M5, delta Serpens, M12, 70 Ophiuches, pi-Aquila, M13, M57, M27, M71, and M15.
