Explore Scientific AR152 Collimation Question
      #5272699 - 06/15/12 11:34 AM

I'm am having difficulty getting an answer regarding the collimation screws on the AR152. Are the two (X3) screws on
the front of the objective those for collimation OR the screws seen atop the objective? I (think) the top would be for "centering" as opposed to collimation. Which is which?

Who did you purchase the scope from? And have you tried contacting them or Explore Scientific directly?

Yes, I contacted both ES and Bresser...odd they don't really clarify, if fact, they provide NO operator's manual for the AR series...only the ED units. I include a photo of both sets of objective adjusting screws. What do you think? Thanks!

Unless I am mistaken they are push/pull sets. You loosen one then tighten the other. In the picture above the ones that are sticking out would be the push and the ones that are flush would pull. Make any changes very carefully using only one set of push pull screws at a time and only turning a fraction of a turn at a time.

Here is a web page that may be of help.

Thanks! Just to be sure, here is a better photo of the two various adjustment ports. For collimation, I assume that I would use only the front-mounted push/pull screws? Are the top adjustors, then for objective "centering"?

One's to lock and the other one is to adjust collimation {the tuner} when the "lock" screw has been backed off slightly to allow lens movement. Then you tighten the "lock" back down when you're done.

Mr Bill and Galaxyman {Karl} have lots of firsthand experience with these cells for tweeking the collimation....ask them for help. I have the same arrangement on my 152 f/8 cell but its not needed any adjusting since 2005...so far

Oh and I agree the makers of these different variations of this scope provide very little info for the buyers with problems down the road

Leave the side centering screws alone for now unless you know what you're going to do by moving them {changing their position and tension on the glass} is my advice.

Good information to have. I have had mine for less than 6 months now. How did you remove the dew shield? I tried but was afraid to apply too much force not knowing exactly how it is held in place.

Hi John, yes after examining the dew shield closely, I applied a simple yet sturdy pull grip to the dew shield and it IS a friction mount....the shield is in place by friction of felt pads located on the objective cell. Not to worry, you just need to give the shield a good steady "pull" off. You may have to "distribute" some pull as you go.

Thanks dsv! It'll make cleaning the objective much easier!
