Hi All,
In the few years I've been collecting meteorites I always had some sort of reason for my madness concerning the type of meteorite I would like next for my collection, Lunar, Martian, 4 Vesta types, historical, Irons, etcetera. I never thought I would ever purchase a specimen simply because I became obsessed with it's name. Yep, it happened. The name is... "Hassayampa". Now of all the strange names assigned to meteorites, including Arizona's "King Tut", the name Hassayampa actually drove me crazy. I was walking around the house continually repeating it's name over and over again in my mind. I couldn't shake it. So, I did what I never expected, I bought a meteorite simply because I liked it's name (or maybe it was out of fear). "Hassayampa".... It's like "holy Yumpin Yiminy". You know, the guy with the big nose, moustache, black horned rimmed glasses and thick wooly, black eyebrows. Holy Hassayampa!
Note: It took a lot of courage for me to make this post, but If you're willing to identify with the confessed insanity above, I dare you to post yours.

Davio,
Here is one of my favorite names for a meteorite. Yes I am guilty of purchasing it solely for its name.

Hi Davio,
I never know what will cause me to "need" to purchase a meteorite.

Peter, To tell you the truth, as of now, it's seems I lost a little focus. When I first started collecting I did have a few missions to accomplish (a nice Iron collection, for example). However, after over three hundred widely assorted acquisitions it gets a little harder to figure out new missions. Lately, collecting has been the associated sociology tied to the fall or find.

Hi Davio,
I agree, for me to purchase a meteorite it must tell me a story. The story should be something different. It can be about its journey from Mars to Earth or The rust on it from camel sweat. As long as it is interesting.

Peter, I didn't realize that the Beer Bottle Pass meteorite specimen has a TKW of 8.9 grams. Has more been found since 1999?

Well, hang on to that one....
Here's a couple pieces of info about the Roach Dry Lake Bed, in Nevada, where your Beer Bottle Pass specimen was found.

A few more meteorites have been in Nevada than in my home state of Massachusetts.

Peter
Peter,
There are only four finds and one fall in my state of Florida. I have only three of the total five. I need the Eustis and the Orlando car/ house hammer (observed fall). I don't believe the owner of the Orlando hammer will ever give it up at any price, as of today.
Writeup from MB 90:
Orlando
Orange County, Florida, USA
Fall: 8 November 2004
Achondrite (eucrite, monomict)
History: On Monday, November 8, 2004, around 6:15 P.M., Ms. Donna Shuford was startled by the noise of something hitting the side of her house. She discovered that something had hit the top of her car and ricocheted onto the side of her house. A single ~180 g stone that had fragmented on impact was found.
Petrography and Geochemistry: (D. Mittlefehldt and M. Zolensky, NASA JSC) Major phases are low-Ca pyroxene (Wo3En35Fs62; Fe/Mn ~30) with lamellae of high-Ca pyroxene (Wo45En29Fs26), and calcic plagioclase (An71 83Ab1628Or~1). Minor phases include titanian chromite (TiO2 = 1620, Al2O3 = 23, MgO = 0.4, MnO = 0.8; [all wt%]), ilmenite (MgO = 0.5, MnO = 0.9 [both wt%]), with silica, iron sulfide, and Fe,Ni metal. The rock is largely unbrecciated, but has shock veins with granular texture and containing some glass. Remnant ophitic/subophitic igneous texture is preserved with plagioclase laths ~1 mm by ~30 µm, and ~2 mm blocky pyroxene grains. In much of the rock, pyroxene has been recrystallized to ~2050 µm equant grains while plagioclase retains its original shape.
Classification: Achondrite (eucrite, monomict).
Specimens: A 20 g type specimen is on deposit at SI (NO IT'S NOT) . The finder holds the main mass.
