Why did they drop the setting circles on the EM400 new

What's the rationale behind it? Excuse my ignorance but how else would you locate a DSO without using Goto?

It was their attempt at a techno mount. The removed all the meat and left it with just the minimum metal. The precision is still there however. I use the Sky-Fi wireless serial adapter and an iPhone running Sky Safari. I polar align using the "awesome" Tak polar scope and then with the iPhone slew to a bright star while the clutches are disengaged. After the mount motors stop moving I manually moving the scope until centered on the object and lock the clutches. I push the Align button... Thats it.. I'm good to visually observe using the Sky Safari app on the iPhone for my goto's. It really is an amazing experience.

Almost as impressive is the fact that you can hardly hear the Takahashi motors slewing.

Yes but what about locating a DSO without a computer, just manually.

This is the most fundamental operation in using a telescope, other than focusing the eyepiece. Google 'star hopping'.

Yea I know but it would have been nice to have the settings circles. They work well with star hopping, they complement each other nicely.
