Possible meteorite sighting in Monrovia, CA new
      #5242544 - 05/27/12 05:08 PM

...in a friend's garden.

Me, I wouldn't know a meteorite unless it hit me on the head. Even then I may not know if, depending on how hard it would have hit me on the head.

The owner says he had 'always' had it, or at least since he a child. The part I can see sticking up out of the ground is about 30" x 24" x 24". It is an aggregate with a lot of different colored inclusions in it.

The owner said a geologist he knows years ago said he thought it might be a meteorite.

So, how to find out if this is a real one, and not mis-identified? Any experts near Monrovia want to take a look?

Oh, owner is selling his house to retire, and says "I'll just leave it here."

PS. Yes, I know, 99.999...% of such stories turn out to be swamp gas. No, that's flying saucers. Yes, I know, 99.9999...% of such meteorite sightings turn out to be something else.

Can you take a few photos and post them here?

Let's put it this way; if this would indeed be a meteorite; it's probably worth as much or more than his house, and he's leaving it?

Seriously, it would be rare indeed for it to be a meteorite; but one can hope!

I finally got out to take some pictures. Yes, some people have odd notions. The owner is elderly, and he has had the stone since he was a young man, if not before. In his mind the stone 'belongs' or is 'part-of' the house.

But, look at some pictures. This may not settle anything, but I'd be interested in any comments ranging from: "Great Asimov's ghost! Put that in a vault and have it tested!" to, "Sorry you wasted your time chasing this."

There is dirt and white bird droppings on the top. It looks like it could be crumbly aggregate, but is solid rock.

Glitches loading pics (CN is saying everything is too large, even tiny pics).

I would be tempted to buy the house, get the meteorite, and then my problem would be choosing which one to sell-off to finance keeping the other one!

Hi Steven,

Its been 40 years or so since I've been there, but I seem to recall there were several meteorites if this size at the Griffith Observatory, perhaps a visual comparison may be of some help ?

Is it magnetic?

It appears to have gaseous bubbled like volcanic rocks typically do

Oh....I forgot to check if it is magnetic. To my untrained eye, it looks like a rock. This is one of those situations where you are probably chasing windmills, but if there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow it will be a might full pot!
