I want to start doing some solar observing. I’ve never engaged in this sort of thing before and was wondering how to do it effectively and safely. I have a TV85 with a StarBeam finderscope. I have the following eyepieces. A 24mm Panoptic, 13mm Nagler type 6, 7mm Nagler type 6, 20mm Plossl, 3.7mm Ethos SX and a 2X Powermate. What’s up with white light filters? I don’t now whether to get a glass one or one made out of Baader film. What type of H-alpha filter would you recommend? How should I protect my eyes? How should I protect my gear? Will my scope heat up?

I'd advise either a Baader Astrosolar film filter, or any of the Herschel wedges for while light. For H alpha go with an unobstructed Lunt LS60F B1200, or Coroanado SM60 BF15 - double stack if you can affrd it.
Using these or other appropriately designed solar filters will ensure your eyes as well as your scope will be fine.

Try a Baader solar filter first. For visual work the wedge has only a small advatage for many times the price. Avoid glass filters like the plague unless you can afford the Zeiss version ... even that's no better than Baader solar film ... and if you can afford a Zeiss glass solar filter, buy a hydrogen alpha solar filter set for your scope instead.
The equipment sold for solar observing is perfectly safe when used as directed.

Hi
I don't know where you are located but I would recommend a visit to your local astronomical society and take a look at some of their equipment first, they will certainly help to keep you safe!
I started first with a sheet of Baader filter it is very safe if used correctly and is a low cost way into solar viewing/imaging
Have a fish around my website there is loads of stuff on it that may help you.
Very best wishes and be careful solar astronomy is extremely addictive!

Keep a cap on the objective. Tape it in place with blue painter's tape if necessary.

Replace it with a TV Sol Searcher, it is a fantastic and simple Sun finder and probably the cheapest item TV sells, 25 dollars.

Which one of the eyepieces or combination of eyepiece and Powermate that I mentioned having would work best?
