Got a new Takahashi TOA 130! Diagonal question. new
      #5276083 - 06/17/12 07:26 PM

Hey Everyone,

Just ordered a Takahashi TOA 130 refractor to replace my Televue 102. Just wanted a bit more light. Question- any opinions on the best diagonal as my everbright will probably sell with my Televue scope. Takahashis are pricey, but if they are worth it I will go for it. The Baader looked nice with the twist-type clamp, but I have no experience with that item. Or there is the AP Maxbright. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have a Stellarvue 2" Deluxe mounted on my TOA130.
It's as close to perfect as you'll get and its weight helps balance the OTA!

Ken,

Congrats on a great new scope.

The diagonals that work best with your TOA are the A-P Maxbright and the Vernonscope 2" 1/20th wave Quartz.

Welcome Ken and congrats with the TOA-130 scope!
I use the Takahashi 2" diagonal and it works GREAT.

I have a 2" Tak and never use it due to the lack of a compression ring. It has a metal set screw at the 2" junction. It almost like it is setup to only use with the 2" to 1.25 (really cool) Tak 1.25 compression holder.

Diagonal? Those things have mirrors in it, right? Wrong, very wrong...

Oh, by the way baader sells zeiss prisms in two sizes

About the mirror part:

Now the Zeiss prisms diagonals are not the finest available. In a TOA they introduce color and for general optical performance I do prefer the best mirror diagonals to the Zeiss prism

I am not familiar with the Tak 2" mirror, but that should be fine.
Mind you, any good quality 2" mirror diagonal will do quite well.

But I have to say, the straight through view without any type of diagonal still works best for my eyes
However, for my neck?

So what are the finest Prisms available??

Indeed in some scopes the don't work and in others they do reading astrosurfs report on the Zeiss Prism with Tec140 & Tec110

I mean there is something to the mirror thing.. with a refractor and a Diagonal only one mirror reflection is actually quite allright.. but I've always found looking through larger SCT's and larger Newton scopes I can't shake the feeling of looking at reflections. It's a different experience from looking through a Refractor.
