"Schmidt" brand SCT? new
      #5284079 - 06/22/12 03:57 PM

a nearby Craigslist posting is for what might be an interesting SCT, no poaching if its something:

http://southjersey.craigslist.org/for/3091876081.html

It is a yellow tubed, with yellow finder, SCT. The mount looks interesting. Not much more info other than it was bought in 1984 for $1,000.

I emailed for size and brand and etc. and all I got back was that it was "Schmidt" brand. I dunno, never heard of that, but who knows? Uncle Rod's CAT guide has no listing for a Schmidt brand nor does the blue book or anything else on the web. Plus, googling "schmidt sct" or "schmidt brand telescope" or "schmidt brand schmidt-cassegrain" obviously brings back the phone book on all SCT's made.

what do you make of it? a tasco re-painted?

Looks like a JSO (Japan Special Optics).

Definitely worth the asking price!!

That looks like a Mizar mount as well, worth the money by itself.

Hey, wait a minute!!!

The pic in the ad is identical to the one in this post from a year and a half ago!!

http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Number/4329788

Maybe PM Nemrod and ask him if he sold his to someone in New Jersey. I hope it's not a scam ad!!

It's bad enough that the seller didn't take a pic of their own telescope, but I see ads all the time where the seller just used a "stock photo" from the manufacturer, or something. But if he really has a JSO, can't he see "JSO" on the scope somewhere? And from what I can tell, the JSOs didn't have the word "schmidt" on them at all.

Have you guys looked at the listing in the last few hours? Looks like new pics and this time of the front of the scope. Very cleary states it is a Soliger 114mm newtonian with a corrector plate on the front. Most likely just a piece of plate glass.

My guess is it turns out to be a Jason "Comet Chaser" Bird-Jones reflector. They're yellow and have an optical window which some confuse with a Schmidt corrector.

Whoops! I see the Soligor now. Those are "Diamond Z" right? Slightly better than the Jason(bigger aperture) but not worth $100 IMHO.

"no poaching if its something" isn't going to work, particularly if it really is a $100 JSO on a Mizar mount

That is not a SCT at all. It is a short tube Newt. with an inbuilt relay 2x barlow lens [ Bird Jones design] to reduce the aberrations form the spherical mirror. It may have 'Catadioptric' but it really is just a modified Newt. I have had several of these and mostly the image is inferior. These are a dime a dozen on E bay. I would avoid.

Yes the picture has changed. Give him credit though he kept the same yellow color scheme!! It definitely was a SCT like the JSO, wonder what picture we will see tomorrow.

Load the page again and hit F5 to refresh the page. An entirely different scope is pictured.

No,no,no

The whole scope pictured now is totally different. NOW it is no longer the Mizar mount, it is a simple common cheap mount. I wouldn't touch this ad with a 10' OTA.
