Baader wedge versus Lunt wedge new
      #5282387 - 06/21/12 02:35 PM

I am considering the purchase of either the Baader or Lunt herschel wedge in 2" format for visual viewing using a TV-85 scope. I know the price difference is significant, but with the Baader you also get the solar continuum filter. Any recommendations /advice would be appreciated to help me make a decision.

If I decide to go with the 2" Lunt I am leaning toward getting the polarizing filter with it. I am not sure if I would like looking at a lime green sun with the solar continuum filter. Any advice is appreciated.

Solar continuum or polarizing filter? Any recommendations deciding on which to purchase. Perhaps I should get both.

Thank you very much. Happy solar viewing.

I use the Lunt 2-inch wedge with the Baader T2-15 and either the the Baader 2-inch polarizing filter or Baader 2-inch continuum filter.

For myself, I use the continuum filter.

When I do public outreach I use the polarizing filter and present a pure white Sun -- otherwise people get confused.

I plan on picking up the Lunt 2" and a polarizing filter when I get the chance. I have viewed through the Lunt (one short session), but not the Baader.

They are both very good, I have the Lunt, but really like the ability to view the Sun from the back of the Baader.

I always use a polarizing filter, to adjust for the brightness and also the "lime" one, but I will also switch between dark yellow or red for public Sun parties because people prefer a real looking Sun.

I wish to thank everyone for all of the responses you sent me on the purchase of the Baader or Lunt wedge.

If I get the Lunt I think I will get both the polar and sc filters. That way I will have the best of two worlds.

Again thanks to all.

PS - how do you put the graemlins in the post?

I have the new Baader wedge and it is excellent. Nice feature is that it can also be used as a sun finder by using the translucent screen on the back of the unit. The unit stays very cool during use. Not like the older style that got very hot. The contiuum filter is also very nice feature.
You can also vary the intensity of the sunlight by using a polarizing filter in your eyepiece and rotating the eyepiece.

If you order the P version of the wedge like I did, you also get a good selection of ND filters, which then allow you to select the brightness better espeically if later you try imaging. Yeah, I dont like visual with a green sun either, but for imaging there is no equal!
