This is really a serious question. Crabgrass seems to grow in the very harsh environments. Would it grow on Mars, if say a seed were to make it there from a spacecraft?

If it was the crabgrass from my front yard, yes!
Seriously though, I doubt it. You need soil or some dirt for weeds, or vegetation to grow. Also, Oxygen and warmer temps than Mars has. It might warm up a bit, but growing in sand without water either?
Naw, its won't grow. No water == No known life
Even the bacteria under the floor of Death Valley have *some* water.

No.
Mars is a significantly harsher environment than Antarctica, which is warmer, wetter, and has a normal terrestrial atmosphere. Crabgrass on Mars would be deep-frozen the majority of the time, and when it wasn't, it would dry out completely in the space of a couple of hours. Even if you could warm it up and wet it, it couldn't survive in the extremely tenuous carbon dioxide atmosphere Mars has. There isn't enough CO2 for it, not enough pressure, and although it isn't commonly known, plants need oxygen to live. And if you provided a terrestrial gas-mix, it would end up scorched by UV radiation, which might not kill it but would make it pretty unhealthy. And even if you provided heat, water, air, and UV protection, the lower gravity might cause growth irregularities that might prevent it from propegating.
Mars is a really, truly inhospitable place.

Sounds like a great site for a penal colony...

Yeah, I had that theory running around in my well-worn synapses for awhile, but now I believe instead that I am in reality strapped down in a mental ward, with tubes running out of every bodily orifice, while hallucinating this life because of a massive overdose of psychotropic drugs administered by a crew of fiendish HMO doctors. Could be, huh?
