I finally got a nice break with clear skies and had two rather nice days at mag. 7.3 - 7.4 skies or better if you translate the SQM. I noticed the shadow from my head, (then my own shadow on the ground) about 1:30a.m. one morning on my silver upper UTA from the brightness of the Milky Way! It was a wonderful couple of nights and on one of them I took time sketching The Lagoon Nebula. I put in the stars first here, and then added the pastel in layers. Alex pointed one thing out to me, I needed to blur my edges on the nebula better here. Also, I started to use a white gel ink pen for my larget stars but the gel ink I am using fades away quickly so I need to use a different one. The bright stars are too dim. Overall I am pretty happy with it.

Not to duplicate what goes on at any site, but I did create a new forum just on astronomical sketching and the various types of it (lunar, solar, double star, deep sky objects etc). It is hoped that this is one where you can post sketches and your method of sketching and receive real input and feedback in what your doing that is constructive and helps one to grow. I would hope it would be used for that. I did a post that shows the growth I've had and I find that interesting. I'll be posting for input on my new sketch of M22 which is a much improved version but not one I am happy with for feedback since I use the Mellish method now. Anyway, if your interested here is the link.

Hi Jay excellent observation and sketch.I also prefer the Mellish technique. But I find it hard to use in the field so I still use the pencil and paper then transcribe the work in the morning in a much more controlled environment.

Jay, that is a fine sketch on a favorite object--one worth a trip or two every year. I find it a wonderful place to go on a night when I can take my time. Must have been a great night.

Jay,
Excellent sketch of M8, I really enjoyed your description of how good that sky was. I played with the brightness and contrast a little and can post here if you like.
