Update: My 10" Dob is now finished new
      #5291059 - 06/27/12 02:49 AM Attachment (87 downloads)

Good Evening All,
Well I finally finished my 10" Dob and really wanted to share my work with all of you. You have inspired me to dive headfirst into a fantastic hobby. I had posted on the 18th that I was almost done. Well I finished the work on the truss poles and made the removable counter weight. The weight you see in the photos is made from lead bird shot and automotive bondo. I mixed it all together and put it in a mold. The light baffle is a garage sale sign painted black and held in place with double sided tape. I got first light last night from my back porch and after quite a few adjustments I was blown away with the views. I had never looked through a 10" scope before and was amazed by how many more stars you see. I can not wait until I can get to a good dark site and really see what this scope can do. Here is a link to more photos: 10" Dob

Beautiful looking scope, if it performs as well as it looks you have a winner!

Thanks everybody. The scope took me about three months of weekends and some nights to finish. Tonight I will be taking it to a dark site about 40 miles from here. The weather report calls for clear skies so we will see what happens. An observing chair is next.. For me not the dog.

Hey, I like what you did there.

You may find the base gets in the way of your feet, something to look out for in practice. Maybe I just have big feet.

A dark sky site will be an experience. It's like a whole new scope.

Really really great! Congratulations!!!
I am guessing that the bearings were done via plungerouter, with a template. Looks fantastic!

A 10" dog???
He looks bigger than that, especially next to your scope!

The side bearings were done with a plunge router and a homemade circle jig. I did the routing while the bearings were still a complete circle. I fastened the bearings to my work table and did the routing with my jig. The cutouts were done with spade bits and a wood rasp. Tedious but the results were worth it.

The dog will be going on the next trip. First light was great but then the moon came out.

A guess...your companion will not be looking for field illumination, will not critique your eyepieces, and will understand your wish to see all the Herschell 400 objects..after he is fed!
