That's correct, Bill. However, most that looked through the old RX400s said that the optics were terrific, that the views were really good. Well...since the advent of the new scopes, they've been overshadowed by the mounts and all the problems the new owners have been facing.

I think most of us are waiting for a real thorough review of the OTA and not the mount. Of course, Meade isn't offering the OTA seperately yet, so until that happens, this is all just an exercise.

David

With the new Meade scopes being f/8, I would think the secondary mirror obstruction would be larger that the f/10 OTA's..possibly approaching 40 percent? Might not be as good for a visual observer like me. But will wait for some actual reviews by the new owners.

Bill

Yeah. I saw some photos of the recent annular solar eclipse, and they reminded me of the new Meades.
I'll stick with f/10.

Bill: What's a Meade 8 ACF/R? Aren't they the same thing?

Yes, my Meade 8 is one of the early "R" models before Meade had to change the name to "ACF". I actually put out a want ad for one of the smooth, glossy classic Meade blue finishes as I do not care for the newer textured finish. Someone answered my ad with a mint M8 R OTA, looked brand new and it was about 5 years old. Probably made and assembled in Meade's old factory in Irvine. No focus shift whatsoever..a really nice scope with excellent optics. Got lucky.

Bill
