I just sent off my registration. Anyone else going or will I have the observing field to myself?

I'm planning on going! This will be my first NSP, really looking forward to it. Hopefully we'll have clear skies all week!

I was seriously considering going, but I came very close to losing my job this week and things are going to be very busy with the 20% reduction in staff. I hope to go to something next year if I still have a job.

I would get in my registration now, as the price goes up by $10 on June 10th. I doubt you will have the fields to yourself, but there still should be plenty of room to set up and view (and some great skies too). I will have my 14 inch "Black Mamba" set up on Dob Row again this year, as I have a *lot* of things I want to try for. Last year's event ended all too soon, but at least this year, I will be there for the entire week (Sunday night through Saturday morning). Clear skies to you.

Tom, that's a bummer about work. I've gone through starting over after losing a job that I planned on retiring from and it stinks. With any luck you won't have to go through that. Hope you can make it to Nebraska next year.

Phil

Jared, you are going to love this place. The skies are super dark, the star party is very well run, and to say you'll have all the room you need would be a vast understatement.

Phil

At our last club meeting, OAS Member Pat Al-Greene shared some SQM readings from sites he's visited over the last year... Merritt Reservoir shared the same 21.6+ reading as Prude Ranch (no surprise to anyone who's been there, but shared for anyone who hasn't experienced it, and those readings go right down to the horizon). The skies are pristine... and you don't have to fight crowds, you can hang out on 'Dob row', or setup alongside like minded enthusiasts, or literally have your own quarter acre of space to yourself if you'd prefer. It's that spacious.

I'm excited, going to Cheyenne this week to pick up a 30" f/5 which I'll be bringing this year.

I'll be heading down for the first time this year. It will also be my first time at a dark site away from mpls. Also for any NSP veterans, are there any picnic tables scattered about at the star party site?

Thanks!

Mark

There are picnic tables at the main tent and if I remember right there are picnic tables at the campgrounds but none on the observing field.

Has anyone made available a horizon panorama of the NSP site for use with TheSkyX? If not that sounds like something interesting to do while waiting for night.

I don't know what the Sky needs... probably not suitable, but in case anyone is interested, here's a pano off of the website.. gives an idea of the 'lay of the land'.

I intend to spend the week observing dark nebula, planetary nebula, and showing my grandson as many Messier objects as I can before he crashes for the night.

Jared, you are going to be wow'd by this place. Last year was my first year going and the skies are so incredibly dark. There's a lot of space and beware of a place they call "Dob Row"... it will get you into trouble :-) I went there with an 8" Sky Quest last year... This year I've got the same scope as what's in David's picture. Aperture fever will hit!

There's a lot of stuff to do around the place during the day too. Canoeing, swimming, tubing, chatting with others. People are really friendly and nice there. There are programs for kids one day. I'm sure you'll have a good time.

Let's hope for clear skies!

~Shawn

Two weeks to go. I hope the wildfires out west don't kill the transparency.

Anyone have information regarding cell and data coverage on the observation site? A buddy of mine, who is also attending, wants to get a Mobile HotSpot but I told him to hold off as I am unsure there is coverage in the area.

Thanks!

Mark

Cell coverage can sometimes be a little spotty depending mostly on the carrier that you are under (some are good voice but not good data, while others are just the opposite). We did manage to get data in and out via one person acting as a "hot spot". I was typing in my NSP update while sitting on a picnic table during the hamburger BBQ on Wednesday night last year using my friend's wireless hot spot, although response times were a little slow sometimes. Clear skies to you.

Have some business to attend to in Chicago the first weekend... will be up Wednesday morning (POSSIBLY Tuesday night if I'm able to get free of work late afternoon, and the skies look promising).

A nice aerial, by long time attendee Jim Rippey, showing the Snake River campground where NSP is held, 'Dob row' the concrete strip at center. The fine sugar sand beaches surrounding the lake, a great place to relax by day.

Can't wait! I installed the Ovision worm gear today on my G11, so i'll hopefully be imaging some galaxies at NSP next week, weather permitting. Looks like a great location!
