36mm Hyperion Aspheric

Like some advice please. I had a Meade 34mm SWA which was very nice indeed. However, in my grab and go set up 102ED found it just too big to use with my other eyepiece. The above is a lot more manageable at around 14oz - was wondering how it would compare?

thanks, andrew

The 36mm Hyperion Aspheric is compact, lightweight, and fairly well corrected - it should be a good match for your 102mm f/7 ED delivering ~20X for ~3.53° TFoV (~3.35° TFoV with a 2" aka 48mm filter @ 42mm clear aperture), with an exit pupil of ~5.1mm. It's been a very good workhorse "finder" at f/5.9 (actual w/Paracorr) in The Mortar providing even better contrast that I'd hoped for it's 36mm FL. Sometime back David Knisely tested mine. He eventually bought one for himself.

I'll second John's recommendation. I have that eyepiece and used to own a 102ED f/7; I used that combination quite happily and it gave good views. In fact, I'll say the wide-field views of the milky way, both summer & winter are wonderful in that combo. I also find it a good combo for observing some of the larger Collinder clusters and extended asterisms that would normally be reserved for binoculars.

Yes, there is slight astigmatism in the outer third at f/7, but when focused and you concentrate on the whole scene, you're not really going to notice it. IMHO you won't get much better for the price; yes the 30mm ES82 is only $50 more, but like you say it's 2 1/2 times the weight so it's not nearly as manageable as the Hyperion.

Thanks for the timely advice. I, too, am considering the 36mm aspheric and an ES 40mm for both my ES 102 & my 8SE. You've answered one big question - I don't think I want to go much bigger than the Baader aspheric.
