I totally get it now! I understand the AP desire! new
      #5298659 - 07/01/12 10:36 PM

For the longest time, I viewed Ap as an expensive and unnecessary aspect of astronomical observing. That simply took people away from the eyepiece to try in vain to mimic the Hubble. And I always told myself, if I really wanted a picture of something, I would invest in a computer chair instead of an observing chair and download something from NASA.

That was when I struggled with a LXD55. When excitement actually meant having the thing work at 10% of its advertised specs, or trying to translate Turn Left at Orion at my finderscope of that terrible LXD55.

A few weeks ago, I charmed myself with a newly purchased CGEM. All of my gotos were spot on at a dark sky site during a Star Party. There was nothing that the scope couldn't find in the eyepiece if my 8 inch could resolve it. I was trying to see just how good it was and was going through a tour really fast, hitting one nebula after another.

Then it dawned onto me. All I was seeing were - gray smudges with a little structure. I needed to start photographing to see better. Now that I have a AP capable mount (which I got really for gotos), I want to start creating images of the light smudges I saw as the next logical step of observing.

I may not understand the AP thing, nor can I justify it - but I finally get it!

That was it for me, Light polluted skies severely limit what I can see through an eyepiece. Taking a picture was the only way to really "see" what was up there.

Obviously anything I can image has already been done better than I ever will. Sure I could just buy a $20.00 coffee table book with them all in there, but something about taking the picture myself, from my driveway, makes me feel like I've actually seen it in person.

Plus it helps that I'm a geek/tinkerer at heart, and astrophotography has unlimited potential for geeking and tinkering... I'll never know it all, and my setup most likely won't ever be "done".

I'm still a rank beginner, but it sure has been fun to learn ...

I marvel at the processing skills involved in the images posted on this site. But for me just getting a 2 minute exposure and seeing the spirals and the bridge of M51 or capturing the colors in M27 and M57 gets me excited. I keep telling myself baby steps baby steps.

You got it all wrong my friend, AP is all about purging yourself of the sinful item called money. You purge yourself of some money, take pictures and see that they are noisy, blurry ugly things and you know God is not happy yet. You purge more of the sinful stuff and buy a cooled CCD, Temperature compensated focuser, OAG etc..... and eventually you know that you are back in good grace when you get outstanding pictures and your bank balance is nearly zero. It's all about saving your soul. Me, I'm flat out broke most of the time therefore I know I'm clean.

To watch somebody catching fish is one thing, to catch the fish yourself is something totally different.

I'm right there as well. I'm in the process of acquiring pieces parts to take my first pic and purge myself of sinful money

I probably have seen hundreds of pics done by people that I couldn't hold a candle to. Either by talent or the equipment they use. By most logic, I should look at a pic, admire it, move on and stay visual. BUT, there is something there when you do it yourself. Like the one poster said, I'd rather catch my own fish

This hobby is what got me involved in photography many many years ago. It is far easier today to get a picture of what is in the ep than it used to be. I am really loving my Canon T3i even though like you I have just gotten into this aspect I am having lots of fun and could keep at this with just what I have probably for the rest of my life and enjoy every day(night) very very much.

I wanted to do it the 1st time I read you COULD do it, even with a cheap digital camera held up to the eyepiece.
I have never understood the whole "Why not just look at Hubble pics?" thought process, it's just plain nonsense in my opinion. (And yes, that is my wife's view of me trying to take noisy little snapshots of the universe too) But here's how I see it, it's a hobby, and a fun one, I enjoy defferent aspects of it. Applying the afore mentioned logic, there is no point in even looking through the eyepiece, there are far more skilled master observers who will see more through the eyepiece than I ever will and they have bigger telescopes, darker skies, better eyepieces, etc..
Why would you learn to play a classical piece on the guitar, Segovia already did it better than you ever will.
Why would you attempt to do anything really...someone has probably done it better...that's not the point, the point is that you are trying and learning and hopefully, having fun and getting a sense of accomplishment.
It sounds like you have been bitten, in which case you will be justifying it often...Welcome to the dark side!

Astrophotography is a hopeless, debilitating obsession and I've loved every moment of it since I captured what I like to think of as:

"The Greatest Astrophoto Ever Taken In the Past, Present, Or Future!!"

It's horrible. I know. But knowing that I personally took the image changed everything and I was instantly hooked and haven't regretted it for a second.

Dude, that's all that matters! I can only hope for the same results.

Sorry dude but this is the
"The Greatest Astrophoto Ever Taken In the Past, Present, Or Future!!"
LOL

this is the first "Real Image" I ever managed to get, and the
only one from that time period that I keep handy.

My best friend of 20 years says "why do you spend all that money taking pictures of what someone else already has taken pictures of?"

Me "Because chicks love the stars (you know I'm right) and when I show them the pics I took they are like...OMG thats so cool I want to come look through your telescope... and I'm like alright ..."

No seriously I pointed my camera through the EP one night and took a pic of the moon. I never should have done that. Now I wouldn't trade my hobby for any other.

I may be broke. Wondering what new toy I am going to buy...no need...this month. Now I can talk about and explain things that very few people know. I can show them picture I took to talk about it.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go refinance my house.

I was already interested in AP and was having trouble finding the Horsehead visually. One night I turned my camera to where it should be and took some loong exposures and much to my surprise.....there it was!!!!
The camera can see sooo much that we can't, colors for one thing and unlike the eye, the photons keep collecting allowing more and more detail to be seen the longer the camera "looks"

HAHAHA... check out my equipment list below... I am completely purged.

Now, to show what can happen during the purge process...

Partially purged

Fully Purged

I totally get it too...but there's nothing left to purge!

My wife asked if it was worth the time and trouble to get my $50,000 image!

I think so.

My wife also thinks it is a waste of time and money. I told her that after I started the astrophotography hobby I am a much happier person, and therefore a happy and better husband.

She accepted that....
