Too cold, too crowded, and difficult drive up the mountain for mediocre viewing. I'll be at Goldendale!

It can be cold, often, and sky is not as dark as Goldendale definately not OSP, but I don't think it can be beat as an event for kids.

This will our 6th year and my daughters 10 and 8 have come every year. When I mentioned heavy workload could limit some of our summer trips they said any of them but Table.
They don't observe alot, but they sure have a great time being free and roaming with their once a year star party friends.

I am getting excited, I love making that final turn and seeing the "city" come into view, although we have trying to arrive early on Wednesday so it is still a bit sparse at that time.

See you there,
Myles

I rather enjoy the cold, clear nights. Being at 6,500' you get out of the muck of the lowlands. Fair trade for me. Not as dark as OSP but it's still freakin fantastic up there. It's beautiful with the rolling green hills and clearings peppered with groves of evergreens all framed nicely with a steel blue sky. The road up is a very easy and scenic drive for most and paved for all but the last two miles. Never heard of anyone having trouble with that. Even the Class A's and semi-trucks cruise on up without a hitch.

I have had some great viewing evenings up there at TMSP and the Orion SP as well. It's great to wander over to John Rhoad's RV (TeleVue Rep) and borrow one of his latest EP's for the night! Hmmmmm a Delos or maybe an Ethos this time?

Doyle and the gang over at the grill are always ready to whip up a great breakfast or a yummy 2AM snack. Nothing like a well-made mocha or latte' to re-energize on a great viewing night! The food up there is fantastic. WAY better than OSP BTW.

Then I usually wander over to John & Ron's RV. John is always ready to show you the goodies through his 25" Obsession. Great way to close out the night. I always meet some great people up there and my wife and our Huskies love it as well. There is tons of stuff to do during the day and lots of interesting speakers and programs. It's organized very well but I have never felt is was over-done.

Last year I won a t-shirt and a subscription to Astronomy magazine at the drawing. That was fun. My friend Loren won a nice Nagler the year before. I am really looking forward to this one and hoping for some more fun-filled clear nights!

Stacy

You asked, I answered. Glad you have a good time up there though. I'll have to admit, a nice warm camper would make a huge difference!

Yes, tent camping at Table is not advisable for those with an aversion to cold. Unless you come prepared, like my 10 year-old nephew (however he is a Cub Scout so he is highly trained in survival). A couple years ago we car-camped and while a little cramped, it was quite cozy.

A few hearty souls brave the elements:

I will be there.

I've been up there every year since 1998 or 1999 (except 2010, when OSP and TMSP were on the same days).

While I agree that the site does not have the best observing conditions, and the weather can be "interesting", I would not want to miss it.

When we first started going up, we took our truck and tent camped. When we did that, 3 nights was about as much as we could do. After a few years of that, we bought a motorhome. Now I go up there the weekend ahead of the event with my youngest son, who loves to observe and looks forward to the star parties almost as much as I do. My wife will join us later in the week. This is the first year that my oldest son won't be joining us. He's 16 years old and has his own obligations this summer. Also, his vision isn't that good and he's never really appreciated the night sky.

The last few years, we've had some other families join us during the actual event dates, and it's kept me really busy. This year, it'll just be us, so it should be more relaxed.

Here's our site last year, before the star party sprung up around us.

-Wade

took a drive this evening... to the top of Table Mountain. Wanted to see how the road was. It was a balmy 36F degrees. In comparison, I'm now down by Vantage and it's 58.

Unfortunately this year that is looking like a "warm snap" it's been downright chilly this year. The last snow we had where I live was on June 6th....BRRRrr.

When I was up there last august, there was a night that was down in the low 40's. Actualy felt warmer than that, but thermometers don't lie.
