How do you pest-proof your roll-off?
      #5303120 - 07/04/12 11:55 PM

Hi All,

While I believe I've come up with a good arrangement for my roll-off where the roof will be permanently captured to the rails, there will still be about 1/2" clearance all around the U-shaped capture area. Given the number of creepy-crawlies out on my land, I'm really concerned about minimizing pest infiltration. I want to minimize the wasps and spiders, and certainly don't want the wood-boring bees going after all my nice new tasty framing! Dust infiltration is a bit of a concern as well. However, the sliding interface of a roll-off is somewhat problematic. It looks like the most practical thing will probably be long continuous brushes, although mounting those may be a challenge. I doubt rubber gaskets for sliding doors, etc. would survive the wood-wood interface for long. More importantly, with a 38' long contact span, that's a LOT of friction to overcome with the drive system. It would be very easy to get to a point where the thing wouldn't even move.

So, I'm wondering if I'm overlooking better alternatives. If I thought my construction would be perfect and stable, closing the tolerances would reduce the size of what could get in, but even an eighth of an inch gap would still be an issue for most pests.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Beo

This is what I have done, & it has worked beautifully.

It's simply the rubber bottom strip for garage doors. It fits snug under the moving part of roof.

That looks like a good solution Carol. I've been wondering how to do this myself.

The staples are a good touch. Does anyone have a good solution for the vertical portion? I'd love to know how to better 'seal' where the rails intersect the building. I minimized it as much as I felt comfortable but I'd love some kind of a 'gasket'. Especially since I see blowing snow in my future .

Because of the heat and humidity in the Gulf south, I left the eaves open to allow air movement...plus a small fan for added circulation. I just use an off the shelf insect spray. I just make sure that all of my goodies are covered and using the stream setting, not the wide spray, I squirt the stuff in the corners and along the upper rails and down along the bottom where the walls meet the floor. It's worked so far. I've only had one wasp nest in 3 years.

David

Not pretty, but works very well where the rails intersect the building. Plus it "sweeps" the rails when the roof is opened.
