Filter wheel placement ?

Hi Folks,
I finally bought a 5X Powermate. So now it's back to the lathe to make yet more adapters for imaging. With my current gear it would work nicely to put the filter wheel before the Powermate. So far I've only imaged with the filters very close to the camera.
Is there any significant disadvantage to placing the filter ahead of the Powermate?
Thanks for any info.
Best Regards,
Bob

I place the wheel next to the scope and it works, no problems.

I was using a filterwheel and 5x PM on my newtonians for Jupiture and Mars this past winter and had to have the it setup as this: focuser-filterwheel-5x-DMK. In order to reach focus. I think the magnification goes up the further away you are from the 5x so you have to take that into account

Thanks Tuawcxs,
that's the arrangement I'm shooting for. I want to be able to get the full range of adjustment from the top of the Powermate out to 100+mm further so I can vary the magnification at will.

Bob

Bob, I use the FW just after the focuser before the 5x, but I also shortened the barrel of the 5x to produce magnification closer to 5x. the 5x powermate is actually closer to 7x due to the nature of its optics when used for imaging.

Hi Sean,
thanks for the input. When you mention shortening the barrel did you change the separation between the two groups of optical elements? Or did you shorten the empty black spacer section that accepts eyepieces. I'm aware of Televue's graph indicating magnification vs distance from the top surface of the Powermate. I intend to create various 1 1/4" extension tubes that can slide as far as possible to allow tailoring the magnification to the seeing. I now have to wonder if you can get slightly less than 5x without introducing gross distortions.
Thanks again for the ideas.
Regards,
Bob

You could use a Barlow (2-3x) instead of the Powermate. It would allow much easier modification of focal length by spacers. Some Barlows lenses can be also threaded into 1,25" nosepieces making the optical path shorter. There is also fancy T2 holder for various Barlow lenses/Powermates: http://www.pierro-astro.com/Accessoires.html#33

Hi again Piotr,
Thanks for the interesting link. I also have my ancient 2.5x barlow for use as you mention. I've been using eyepiece projection all these years, and have been happy with the very wide range of image scale available just by sliding the camera back and forth. The downside has been the noticeable field curvature on lunar imaging. I've also wondered about light throughput with my old setup.

Bob
