First Light 15X70 Skymasters new
      #51612 - 02/08/04 06:23 AM

Well, It's my birthday today. Yep, turn 50! No jokes about black balloons, OK? I'm sure my younger brother has something akin to that up his sleeve. Back to the matter at hand: Couldn't sleep, so I decided to break out the Skymasters out at 5:30 AM. For me, these things are awesome!! I'm not awake to really identify what all I looked in 10 shivering minutes,(It's 12F right now) but here goes. I looked at Albireo, and could distinctly see the yellow component, possibly the blue one also. Unfortunately, my meds give me an ungodly case of the shakes, so next time I'll use the tripod i bought. I checked out Cygnus, and was pleasantly surprised, The moon is what, waning gibbous now? Bright as an arc lamp though. Really screwed up the seeing, lemme tellya. Found what I think is a large open cluster between Cygnus, and Aquila,(probably Vulpecula). Check out Hercules a little bit, said wow. Then I panned over Ursa Major, again said wow. Can hardly wait to try these when the Moon is at a lesser phase. If I'm incomprehensible, it's because I need COFFEE!! Will post more later. Clear Dark Skies!! WW

Welcome to the "50s" club.

I am curious about your 15x70s - - your personal opinion about peformance and how they met (or did not meet) your expectations. I was shopping and using the BN forum as a guide. Apparently the Skymasters are the same as the Oberwerk 15x70s except that the newer Oberwerk version has a multi-coating that improves viewing.

Thanks - Dave

Werewolf,
Today Feb8 is my B-day as well. Just a bit of trivia Feb8 is also the DOB of one well known father of science fiction Jules Verne-many of his Sci-fi stories were based on what was then solid science and turned out to be prophetic in nature. I envy you the clear skies. Here in the Pacific NW it has been weeks since we have had a decent clear night. Allow me to join Dave in extending congratulations on having survived 5 decades.
R/S,
Dan

DeeZee,

I'm not too familiar with astro-binoculars, but here goes. The light gathering power is fantastic when compared to your more traditional 50mm binos. It calculates to almost twice as much as the 50's. The 15X70 Skymasters go 3 lbs, and change, and so can be hand held for decent periods of time. As far as my expectations go, I didn't really know to expect, and therefore was very impressed. Perhaps the Swarovski's, etc would blow these out of the water, but for the money(my favorite qualifier), I don't think these can be beat. Kenny J will probably pipe up with his educated opinion(He's quite good, by the way). Buy what you can afford. In my case it was the Skymasters @ $90.84 shipping included. Clear Dark Skies!! WW

Werewolf:

Thanks for the run down on the binocs.

I almost purchased these, mostly because of price, then decided to do more shopping. I read your other thread and it sure sounds like your pleased. That is very important.
