Mounting a cellphone to the eyepiece
      #5308918 - 07/08/12 08:18 PM

Hello to all
Just got a Samsung Galaxy II. It's camera is one of the pest I've ever saw! 8MP Full HD

Already took some Pics through the eyepiece manually holding.

just wanted to ask if there is any idea how to connect it constantly, so movies will be taken and stacked later?

10x

Eden

Maybe this would work?

I could see making something similar out of a block of wood with a hole drilled through it with a forstner bit to take the eyepiece, with a slot for clamping it tight with a thumbscrew, and attaching the block to a piece of thin plywood that the phone is stuck to with double-sided foam tape.

Maybe an hour of fiddling and a couple scraps of wood and tape?

I made something similar years ago for my coolpix 4500 camera, until I found that the threaded eyepieces that Scopetronix used to sell offered a wider field and more secure connection to the camera than my 26mm plossl did.

I checked out your Venus transit album. Anyone than can make such a beautiful telescope and mount could not be satisfied with putting a factory built camera adapter on it.

Orion sell an i Phone adapter/ holder for $60 which features a cradle for the phone that clamps to the telescope eyepiece.

Excellent drawing! I'm tempted to try making one.

I hope you'll post those phone pics of the occultation...and the constructed phone holder.

Eden,

You have inspired me to make one. Mine's a one night hack in the workshop. I didn't even bother with a drill press, just a bench vise and hand drill. Yet it works very well.

OK. It's Friday here in Israel. Like Saturday in the US, So I've made the first attempt to make it.

It works (on daylight) very nice.
Here are some pictures:

Images from the making process can be seen Here:

Tonight I'll test it with Saturn.

Yes, for the iPhone. I have since purchased better fitting knobs and screws and may tinker a little to clean up the execution.

Your question has prompted a thought...
Make an eyepiece/cellphone alignment platform with detents for various phone makes. This would be useful for public outreach when everyone in line pulls out their phone to try to do afocal photography by hand on your telescope.
