celestron cpc base question new
      #5310145 - 07/09/12 05:14 PM

i might have asked this question before but dont remember what the reply was. im back thinking about the 11"cpc, i have the nexstar 6" se and like the setup procedure. my question is about the bottom of the base. i would like to carry it out to my viewing area( about 20') and set it on a very sturdy bench i built. how much flat area is there under the base ( no kids or dogs to turn it over) would it set on the bench on its own without being bolted down. thanks, don

Hi Don,
That's exactly what I do . . . I place the CPC1100 on my picnic table - it's very stable unless your table is on uneven ground and slants heavily! Just remember not to tighten the clutches when you move the scope - no need to stress the system! If your bench is reasonably flat and level , you won't have any problems. This is what I do . . .then I bring out the tripod and transfer the scope to the tripod . . . if you'er gonna use the bench as the "tripod base" you may want to drill bolt holes so you can attach the scope to the bench! that way the motion of the scope and balancing won't crash it when slewing . . . !!

Regards,
Bob

There are three captive bolts on the underside of the tripod head which screw into three equidistant apertures on the bottom of the base. It should be easy to find the size and get three matching bolts you cold use to secure the upper OTA/fork/base assembly to something like a level table. The captive bolts on the tripod do not come all tje way off so you want to leave them there.
