The Great Rift in the Milky Way new
      #5312292 - 07/11/12 12:11 AM Attachment (54 downloads)

Here's a shot with Canon's 18-55mm kit zoom lens of the Great Rift in the Milky Way shot from Cherry Springs.

http://www.astropix.com/HTML/SHOW_DIG/The_Great_Rift.HTM

Click on the link to see a much higher resolution version with more information.

This was shot at 18mm and is a stack of 5 x 10min at ISO 1600 at f/4.5 with a modified Canon XS (1000D) unfiltered.

Jerry

Hi Erik,

Thank you.

Yes, it is an outstanding lens for astro for its price.

Almost as good as the 16-35mm f/2.8L USM, but about a stop slower.

Jerry

Hi SunBlack,

Thank you.

This lens doesn't really have much axial chromatic aberration at all when stopped down a stop or so.

See my tests here:

Holy cr4p! Nice shot, Jerry. There's a certain ominousness in the scale and span of the Great Rift wrt visible foreground stars. Nothing beats a clear, dark sky on a summer night - thanks for the reminder...

That is really beautiful shot, Jerry! Why you decide to go with 1600 ISO this time?

Hi Dave,

Thank you!

There certainly isn't anything like the beauty and majesty of the night sky from a dark-sky location!

Hi Sergio,

Thank you!

I used 1600 because I was stopped down to f/4.5 and didn't want to go any longer than 10 minutes per sub.

Jerry
