Hi everyone
My first post on CN so what better place to start than the sketching section. I've only recently started sketching and I've found that its the way forward for me as far as visual observing is concerned, its just sooooo relaxing and rewarding.
This is a sketch from last month using pastels, something which I'd never tried before but I like the results (just need some more practice).
M 5 NGC 5904 Constellation - Serpens Globular cluster
Location - home Date - 27/5/12 Time - 2300-0010 Seeing (Antoniadi) - IV to III later SQM - 20.1
Telescope - 12" Skywatcher EP - 8mm BST (x187) No filter
Sketch materials - White pastel on black paper
Session notes Poor seeing conditions at the start of the evening due to high wispy cloud moving from the SE which cleared around midnight. I could resolve stars even to the centre of cluster but they were very faint almost 'dusty'. Surprised that there wasn't any real bright stars in the FoV, I'm sure this would be different if observed from a dark site. Very impressive glob cluster though, just as good as M13.

Mike,
You are correct it did turn out very nice. You have captured this great globular just as it looks at the eyepiece. Well done.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and kind words on the sketch.
Funnily enough I've found sketching with pastels a lot easier than I thought, I even attempted a lunar sketch at the EP with pastels and charcoal a couple weeks ago which I found tricky but with some practice I think I can improve on. As usual we have poor weather and cloudy skies in the UK but I'II post more as soon as the weather permits.

Luna is the hardest target you will encounter but I think you're up to the challenge.

Hello Mike! Welcome to CN.
I really like your rendition of M5. There is a lovely depth to it that gives it the "through the eyepiece" look. Just fabulous.
Hope the sky improves for you too.
Alex.
